Hi all!
I'm looking to buy an entry-level cheapish multi-effects unit for my guitar.
I have streamlined this down to two choices: the Zoom G1X or the Digitech RP80.
Any advice?
Thanks!

Dec 21, 2006 08:51 am Ive seen alot of ppl using Zoom stuff with very good results... well good for a multi atleast... my cousin had a series of Digitechs growing up coz he was a hobbyist who didnt care much for tone, i HATED them, i even hate their stompboxes. Anyhow, I personally would say that if u like to play guitar and plan to play live anytime in teh future on any scale dont waste your money on multi's coz their raelly for bedroom musicians. In the long run, stompboxes are much more worth their value and their really not taht different in price if u choose wisely.
If u r looking for cheap though, i think nowadays alot of teh software stuff is way cheaper, u can really complicated rigs in software and buy cheap foot controllers for them ive heard.

Dec 21, 2006 02:39 pm I have a boss gt6, and am pretty happy with it. Maybe a used 6, or maybe a gt3, or gt5. They can't be going for much now-a-days.

I'd wager that this would sound better than both of the ones you listed. THough I haven't used a gt3, so you might want to research further first.

Dec 21, 2006 06:59 pm Indeed I must agree with tonyoci on the RP80 sounding not so good. It is a pity really because all their other multi's sound superb. I have used their rack gear for years and still keep a TSR-12 because of some of the sounds it has.

Dec 21, 2006 09:18 pm when i was in a band some years ago both of my guitar player at the time got FX boards , one was a zoom the other a digitech (i have a few digitech things and they work fine) , the zooms presets and sounds had a all around better sound at the time vs the tinny noisy digitech board. I've used Digitechs rack gear and it's been good , but I had a friend who had a RP model and my behringer V amp kicked it's butt. Another friend has a ME30 by boss ( i don't think they make em any more) and it was there entry level onea dn it still works alright to this day. I'd say check out harmony central for reviews and such and go to a guitar center (if you have one ) and try a few out .

Dec 22, 2006 11:41 am The only multi-effects or modelling box that has actually impressed me to date is the Boss GT series. The PODs, the VAmps, the Digitechs, the Zooms all have this conspicuously "modelled" sound to them that I can't quite describe, but I can almost always pick out when I hear. The Boss GT7 and GT8 have truly sounded natural, much more like a mic'd cabinet than the others.
Maybe its in the users, maybe its in the unit itself, but either way the Boss GTs are the only ones that have passed the Turing Test with me.
Somebody did post a song they did with the RP80 recorded direct and it was great for that lo-fi kind of indie sound. Maybe it was something peculiar about the way he had it set up but it was pretty convincing.
