Here's seredipity for you. No sooner had I posted, but my cellphone rings. It's my buddy at SD asking if I wanted to go. Cool! Is there a Saturday? I'll have to look. Definitely going to be fun. I haven't been in years.

Just thought about something. Maybe someone at SD is reading HRC. I'll need to be careful what I post....

Just looked. Probably Saturday 20th January for me. I'll be the drooling mess.

Let's talk before then. Are you working? At a booth? Let me know. It would be cool to meet, and perhaps partake of a cold, frothy adult beverage.

I write reviews for a guitar gear website so I will be schmoozing with a lot of the dealers. Always got time for a brewsky though. I'll definately be in touch as the time gets closer.

But a "wee drachm" of whiskey is exactly the amount that you pour into the glass. Could be any size really....

Anyway, it's not like I'd ask for just "beer" or even a "cup". If you ask for beer, there's a tendency for bar personnel to serve something like "Coors", "Budweiser", "Miller" or other non-beers.

"Landlord!! A pint of light-and-Ordinary...."
(Young's, you know...Wandsworth beer)

Would kill for one of those right now.

yum, beer. I just tried one out last week. A St. Peters something, something. The exact name leaves me at the moment. Very dark, thick and a tiny chocolate finish to it I think. I will be finding me more of that. Twas a gift from a co-worker who moonlights in a liquor store. Very tasty though.

I used to go to a little riverside (Thames...natch) pub in Sunbury. Can't for the life of me remember the name. Anyway, they had an amazing array of ales. Three pints of "Bishop's Tipple" and I was reelin'.

I'll be sippin some Old Speckled Hen tomorrow night while working on the scout movie. I'm sure it isn't the same coming from the can though as it is draught.

I've not tried it from the can but the bottles are good.Poured into a pint glass takes out some of the gas and gives it a good head so it shouldn't taste 'tinny'. Its one of those beers that are very moreish then it sneaks up on you.;)

It's not easy being British in California.

A friend: "Ian, would you like a Coors Light?"
Me: "No. Do you have any beer?"

Tallchap ,if you're ever up in nothern California , there are a number of brewer pubs. In fact a few of us make a nice amber ale and a tasty stout.

dB, is this how you play the cow bell to 'Listen to the Music' when you've had too many shiner bock's?

Hujambo, you really have to pour it out of the can as well, they have the little capsule that pops in there and recommend pouring it immediately into a pint glass.

Speaking again of beer, I don't remember who it was Possibly Hujambo that mentioned a Mikes Brown, from Colorado. But I got to try it the other night. Nice and tasty and thick. Nice fat head on it, and the smell was fantastic. Again the big pint and pouring is recommended.

Ooops!!!

I meant Mighty Brown Ale

The other I mentioned earlier in this or another thread is St Peters Cream Ale, that was some tasty stuff. And strong as well.

Beer:
Yep. I'm likely going to drive down on Friday night to stay at my Mother in Law's house in Anaheim so I can attack first thing on Saturday. Not sure how long I'll stay, but I'd love to meet up with you.

If I hear anyone play "Stairway to Heaven" I'm leaving.

Haha, last year I didn't hear it once (Stairway) but I must say by the end of the show I was pretty tired of hearing shred as well.

I'll PM my cell number. I will be there on Sat as well.

EDIT: I just looked and I couldn't find a way to PM you through this site. If you can drop me a line a lonnie[at]guitargearheads.com I will send you my cell phone number.

What booth is he at? Is he endorsing?

Actually I'm ashamed to say that I'm not exactly sure of the precise context of his performance. I remember him mentioning that something about an All-Star jam.

I know he was invited by Guitar Player Magazine since he won the Guitar Hero competition back in September.

He also has gotten an endorsement from DiMarzio since then so I wouldn't be surprised if he's at their booth as well.

The last few months have been pretty good to the guy!

Had to slip away early due to a family crisis (pronounced "drama" - no, I don't want to talk about it...).
Beerhunter: I got your text message, sorry we couldn't hook up. Really sorry. Next year?

There were a lot of oddity type guitars with way too many strings and necks the size of scaffolding planks. Tappity tappity. Oh, well.

Some nice new innovations. Fender has a new strat with a couple of widget knobs. Different tunings, different pickup configurations, emulations..etc. similar to a Variax really, but in a real strat.

The new Eddie Van Halen Frankenstein guitar was in a glass case. Very real looking.

Saddest things:
The 'b' list 'rock stars' sitting around trying to be recognized and sign an autograph (didn't have the lines like Kerry King had!).

Rick Derringer...looks like he's been at the bottom of a brandy bottle for thirty years. No longer the handsome gunslinger...

'B' list manufacturers (downstairs) fawning over me because my badge said "Seymour Duncan" on it. Didn't have the heart to tell them I was a guest. They were usually too busy giving their pitch to listen. Could have sold a million pickups to them.

The japanese violin and trombone manufacturers....very quiet at their booths.

Chap sits down in a booth, is handed a bass, and suddenly has an audience of fifty people. Sadly, he can't play very well (well, it was a nine string bass...).

Gibson suite: No, you can't come in unless you have an appointment. We're far too precious.

Happy things:
The Gretsch Billy Gibbons model. How cool is that?

Fender's new storage stool that looks like a little combo amp. Want one.

The porn stars donwstairs. I know...I know...but a man can't help looking.

Zvex booth - set up like a campsite (tent and all) with lots of little pedals and amps...Plus a pretty girl in shorts and braids.....I know...I know...but a man can't help looking.

Digitech's suite: had a guitar hanging from every workstation with headphones so people could get a hands on experience.

Paul Reed Smith booth: Are those guitars really that pretty? Very few "SE" models, which I would have like to have seen...

Hey TallChap,

I too was disapointed that we couldn't get together to have a couple of beers but man I was incredibly busy. Much busier than I expected.

As for the show I think TC has provided a pretty good overview of the show. Not a whole lot different than last year.

Gibson - well only press was allowed in but I had a press pass so I was able to film their entire booth. Not sure why they limit access as there wasn't really anything special.

G&L Guitars - I was invited to tour their factory and filmed the entire guitar building process. I was also allowed into Leo Fender's lab which has remained untouched since he died. Lots of history in that room that is for sure. We also interviewed Phylis Fender for about 15 minutes while she talked about Leo.

Met with Jim Marshall.

Interviewed Greg Bennett for about 20 minutes.

Anyways, I took about 3 hours worth of video and I'm in the process of capturing it all to AVI so that I can edit and start posting on YouTube. I will start posting links as soon as I get them uploaded. Lots of cool footage coming.

Way to go BeerHunter!!! Can't wait to see them.

On PRS guitars, yes they are that pretty. Pity more guitar makers don't go that extra inch or two for looks.

On Rick Derringer, yep I'm pretty sure he has been. Joan Jett booted him as her opener because of his sloppyness. That is a pity indeed. Not to old to sober up though.

On the porn stars downstairs, who would blame ya? Not me!
