Daisy Chaining a Firepod and a Motu 896HD

Hey All! Question for you, I'm trying to figure out how to get a Firepod and a Motu 896HD, daisy chained together, to work with CueBase, but can't get it to recognize both interfaces at the same time so I can have 16+ channels to record at the same time.

Anyone know how to do this? I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can tell me how it done, (with as much detail as possible.)

I've done it on my Mac using their Aggregate device feature, but have no clue how to do it on my PC.

Hey Chad, I posted this saem reply in the other thread you asked this question in.

I'll state this right up front so as not to add confusion. The reason your Mac was able to see both devices is the driver is much differant. However, there is no recording software that will allow two differant audio drivers to be active in one program at the same time. The program will indeed see both devices but it will not allow them to perform recording or playback together at the same time. You can however use one device for recording and the other for playback, but that is something I will not recomend as the clock speeds are differant and the timing would be off even if it is just a tiny bit. If the device does allow it though you can lock one devices clock to the other devices clock.

Anyway here is the reply from the other thread.

You will not be able to get two differant manufacturers devices that use USB or Firewire to work together. The ASIO drivers will not allow another set to be run when they are live. The acception to the rule in Geoffs case is the Audiophile is a PCI based card and not Firewire or USB.

And daisy chaining especially wont work as the chained device will not be seen unless the port it is chained through is specified to be used in that manor. MOTU has a special card that will allow multiple interfaces to be connected into the single card, I dont know about the Presonus unit but I dont think they have that option.

I've actually got 2 older 896's and back when Cubase SX1 or SX2 first came out.. I had all 16 I/O's recording @ 24/96 on Athlon PC's (what I currently use). Then after about 30 min. screwing around with getting levels for a demo, the last 896 in the chain started dropping sync. Trust me on this, I ran the gambit of possibilities and resolutions.

Never since have I had a successful sync daisy chaining. The computer could handle it but the hardware boxes didn't. Thats why I bought both in the first place. I swear its just a ploy for MOTU to get you to buy their digital time piece sync device... which I doubt will help. It does seem like the 2 would work together being both MOTU but if different sound drivers I'd have to say no way. I would be weary of syncing claims from MOTU cause they have not impressed me 1 bit with their support to date.

Call their tech support and cross your fingers. Maybe they have some driver fix solution. Good luck, I'd like to know what happens with this so post if you get a chance after your conclusion

Also, like Noize said, the PCI card is prolly the best bet.

Yep, if your going to run the MOTU stuff you are best off running their proprietary card which will allow 4 units, even a combination of their other units to all run in sync. Aside from a PT HD system it is one of the most stable rock solid sync systems out there. And using their card you dont need the clock unless you are doing film and syncing a video deck to it.
