Ok so im at a community college and im taking a public Speaking class. My newest assignment is to give a 4-5 minute speech that informs the audeince about a topic of our choice. Digital recording is basically the only thing i know a little about so I choose as as my topic.
my question is how would you go about teaching a class of people, who know nothing about music or recording, the BASICS of home recording. What ARE the basics.

Introduction to the tools available for audio engineers, prices, what you use, and what you recommend.
A good old plug for HRC!
Basics of recording:
Mic to Pre - Soundcard
Keep the levels low so it never peaks over 0 dBFS
Basics of mixing:
Editing
Compression and EQ
Should take up 5 minutes easy!

Sep 13, 2006 10:04 am I give alot of personal speeches to kids and ppl around me, i think as all people in all topics, the important thing is not to make it a big technical speech about what happens at 20 khz. Everyone likes music and sound, but not how its done. You should start off with something that draws them into it with something they like, like some fun facts about famous albums that theyll probably know, thatll lead u into the main topics u should cover: pre-production and gettin the band or singer on tape, mixing in the digital realm, finishing up the product.

Sep 13, 2006 10:08 am I was thinking, start with the 'no recording' angle, before recorded media, how if you weren't there, you didn't hear it. Then go to analog, with the cylinder of edison, then vinyl, then move to tape, then move to digital. You could give pros and cons of each, and why they became popular. With the digital area, you could give the different type of recording (CDs, dat, HD, DAW, etc), and maybe a little about how analog and digital live together. Maybe a little software, how protools ran the roost for years, etc.
