As I posted a few weeks ago, I've aquired a Hammond T-582c spinet organ. I'm to the point where I want to start recording it but am unsure of the best mics to use. The organ a built in leslie (710) which output to two (2) stationary speakers; one bass and the other mid/high. I know I should mic this thing with two mics (one on each speaker) to preserve the great leslie effect, but I'm unsure on what type of mics to use. Could any one give any suggestions? I'm willing to purchase some new mics if needed be. Thanks!

Aug 31, 2006 11:27 am Have you tried with the mics you have now? I'd think the 57 would be a good start for either speaker.
Then I'd lean towards a SPB1 or a Rode NT1A. I'm thinking both of those are very flat, non-coloring mics, like some LDC can be (for vocals).
Course, I'd try the 990 first, and maybe a combination of one 57, plus the 990, and see how that sounds. Maybe all three, put a 57 on each speaker, then the 990 back around 3 feet.
I'd also think to maximize my room effect as well. Put the thing in a corner, and then mic from different places.
I'm thinking the placement will have a great effect on the recording, maybe moreso than new mics.

As for miccing the thing. I would definately experiment with it since it uses kind lf a Leslie emulter instead of the rotating drom on the woofer and a counter rotating horn. It uses kind of a tremelo baffle thing which still sounds very good.
When Miccing my old Leslies I used a pair of 57's usually and on occasion would put an LDC out about a foot or more located in between the drum and horn output vents.
