I have Reason 3.0

I have a Yamaha DJX Keyboard

I have just bought a USB Midi cable. I have opened reason and connected it up to the PC. The computer ecognises a USB Device. I have tried adding the keyboard to Reason but nothing happens. Its not automatically finding it so I have selected the manual thing and still not working.

The cable has 3 lights on it, a red a green and an amber one. Only the red one lights up.

Maybe I need to change a setting on the keyboard?

Hope someone can help.

Josh

well I have no idea how to conduct Reason but I happen to have that keyboard. I would think it is a setting in the software that you must find because for the keyboard there is nothing you must set. Usually I only go to Function 84 to turn off the Local so that the keyboard doesnt play its own sounds, but the keyboard will automatically put out a MIDI signal.

However, since your software doesn't recognize it and you said you went to do it manually and did not see it, I would think that you do not have the correct drivers installed if any. Make sure you have drivers installed that are correct for the conversion cable.

Its a cable that doesnt need drivers, i.e - it has an interface. Built in, as I can see the little circuit board in the center.

If I go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio, at the bottom it has 'MIDI music playback' the default setting is 'Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth' below that there are the Volume and About buttons which are both clickable.

If I plug in the keyboard, a new thing comes down in the drop-down box called 'USB Audio Device' however when I select that, the Volume and About buttons are clicked it.

I am not sure whther that means the cable is working, or not working.

Hope you can help, I cant wait any longer without composing some music!

I think that you're going to need to install drivers for your Yamaha so that Windows will recognize it as a Yamaha DJX keyboard and not some generic USB device. Windows (and Reason) have no idea what to do with a generic USB device. It could be an audio device, a microphone, a disk drive, a blender, a toaster...who knows.

My attempts at locating drivers for this device have come up empty though. Did the keyboard come with a CD?

I'll toss in a question as well here.
Exactly what is the cable and who makes it? Amodel number would be great if it is a USB midi interface cable it will definately need drivers to be recognized in Reason.

When it is installed properly youcan go to the options for midi devices in Reason and it should show up as a midi port. Then you simply select that as your midi input for Reason and your good as gold.

cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-to-MID...bayphotohosting

That is the exact item I have. With the three lights on the blue interface

I dont believe the keyboard came with a CD, and if it did, it would be long gone..

The cable has an interface in the middle as you can see, it is a circuit board which is supposed to have the built in drivers.

When I plug it in, only the red light is lighting.

Well I honestly have never seen a midi interface that functioned without a driver. The only thing I can think is it somehow is using a default windows midi driver. But I can honestly say.

The driver is what tells the software exactly what it is looking for to use as the midi input and output. If indeed it does not need a driver then you should be able to see it as a port in your application when you look at your midi preferances to choose the port to use for input and output.

If you dont see anything, then you need to install a driver, either something that windows can default to or on that is designed for that unit.

Does it have any kind of manufacturer information on it at all?

No information. There are no drivers that I can find. It is advertised as not needing drivers as it has the hardware interface in it.

Its annoying me now as I want to get recording..

I did a little research on the item listed. It was prompted by an audio interface cable that is 1/4" on one end and USB on the other I saw advertised. It as well claims to need no drivers. But there is a catch. It does USE drivers. But what it uses for drivers are the generic windows plug and play type drivers.

So what happens is it depends on your version of windows to be plug and play compatable. So what you are looking for in your midi options will be whatever windows determines to be the generic midi driver for that thing. So you do need to go in and choose an active driver for the midi port and then assign that port as your input/output in the application.

And honestly I will never buy a none name brand device off of e-bay. To many disshonest hucksters out there selling garbage.

Reason should have an options tab near the top. you will want to click options, then there should be a midi tab, click that. Now there should be a devices or drivers tab go there and look for a midi input driver. I cant honestly tell you what it will say. But it could be something like Windows Midi Mapper or the like. Select it. Then you should be able to choose it in Reasons track view as your midi input port by the same name you selected in the midi devices section.

In Reason try:

Edit/ Preferences/ Page/ Midi/ then select item/
-or- ( and most likely in addition too)
Edit/ Preferences/ Page/ Advance Midi/ External Control/ Bus A/ then select keyboard device input... probably only 1 option in your case.

If all else fails, you may want to restart your computer and enter BIOS upon starting and make sure "Plug & Play" is switched on and if possible "Reset the Configuratin Data" in BIOS. If you do not know what you're doing in BIOS, don't mess with it, you will be opening a can-o-worms that will become extensive since your screen is not in front of me. Good luck !
