New (Old) song! Children's song (No S#*T!!) Called "Bullfrogs"

Don't ask...but I could use some input on levels and tones and EQ and all that. It's a children's song called "Bullfrogs" that I wrote about 25 years ago. I was asked to record it, so I did. I may actually get a little something out of the deal if it's what they want.

Anyway, it's just me and my Martin acoustic (a couple of times) and an overdubbed bass.

Aside from the dopey-ness of it all...how does it sound?

Thanks!

Jim

I have to admit it, I listened to this 5 times so far. And I giggled every time.

Ok, on to the critical listening then. First off, what kind of bass was it? It sounds almost like an upright. Everything seems to have a good level to it. The mix itself is very good and it all sits well placed. I guess my only comment would be all aspects could use a little bit more brightness. I think that might help define the bass a little more as well.

But it honestly sounds good as is. But it does have an older recording sound to it. Was this the original recording, or did you redo the tracks recently?

Thanks Noize, glad you're enjoying it.

Just recorded it yesterday...the bass is just my G&L 2000. I haven't EQ'd anything, just added a touch of reverb.

I hear what you're saying about brightness. Approximately which frequency would you recommend I start tinkering with to achieve a bit more brightness?

Thanks for the listen(s) and the advice!

That's classic Jim, put a smile on my face! Reminds me of when I was a kid I used to listen to this one song over and over I think the title was "Little Red Chigger". This is one I would probably have been doing the same. :)

I think the mix is really good vox & guitar wise, but to me the bass seems a bit overpowering. I'm listening on headphones and they may be exaggerating the bass. I don't have any decent speakers hooked up yet so can't give you any idea there.

I'm not sure where I'd boost frequencies until the bass was a little less prominent but probably in the 2k-5k range. Do you have Harbal yet? I think it would probably fix ya right up. ;)

this song is wonderful, great way to start my day :) but yeah, I agree that the bass is overpowering.

Thanks for the valuable input. I hav Har-Bal-ized it, and I think it sounds a lot brighter (too bright?) and the bass isn't quite as overwhelming.

What do you think?

I dont think it is too bright now. It sounds just about right. The bass has a little more defanition now and the guitar strings sound a bit brighter, just right really. The voices are pretty good as well now, nicely defined. I will take a couple minutes after some errands and a/b them to see were you ended up.

But honestly it sounds just about right now.

Yep that's much better Jim. The vocals are much more present now along with the guitar. Doesn't sound too bright to me either, still has a nice warm sound, but with more definition in all the parts.

Be sure to let us know if it gets picked, I'm betting it will. :)

Sounds cool Jim!!

A nice mix indeed and a bit of different "content" from your usual stuff ;-)!

Indeed, guitars and vocals sit well together, the bass sounds fine to my ears and all in, a nice number with a good bit of recording done there...

Did you use the VF160 or the PC for this?? IM toying with the idea of using the VF160 for an acoustic EP I may make...I like the reverb on the VF160 and the sounds I can get messing with the mix...I havent yet done a mix on it but I have added fx and EQ to stuff then imported to Cubase...its a nice machine for sure...preamps arent too bad either.

Anyways - its cool Jim...good work and good to hear from ya again buddy.

P.S. Awra best with yer song and the others you've been looking to release - hope it goes well for ya

This sounds a lot better mate. Not too bright at all. I actually think it sounds about right for the sog. Sounds kinda old too, which i like.

Haa! Great Job!

I can't comment on the mix much, but the song sure is fun!
