Vocal Volume Question

I know there are a few experts here who might be able to help shed some light on this for me.

I have started having trouble with vocal volumes in my mixes (started is the wrong word since I only recently started checking on different systems). Typically if I get the levels right on one system, they are typically too loud or too quiet on another. For example a good monitor mix will sound too loud in headphones or two quiet in the car. I also find the vocal volumes too loud when the song is played at low volume.

The problem of course is that if I fix for one system then it messes up another.

I am thinking this may be more of an EQ or compression issue.

Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Tony

Well, I'm no expert, but if your compression is dialed in nicely it's probably an EQ issue. This plagued me for years and has burned up way too many CDR's. I don't mean to be a fanboy but you may want to read up on HARBAL a bit, it's worked wonders for me now that I'm finally starting to understand it's power.

Hey there, I'm not sure my compression is dialed in so it's hard to tell.

I frequently use the har-bal demo to get an idea but really don't understand it well, I also have never understood that whole "crossing frequencies" argument since all the tracks just look like a curve to me.

Yeahm, I would say compress it a bit more, get the vocal smoother across the spectrum.
