Aug. 1st 1981

To some it was the dawn of a new age. To others it was the end of music as we once knew it. MTV is now 25 years old. Who honestly would have thought in 1981 that a simple cable show playing nothing but music video's would 25 years later become an empire that still to this day influances how we get fed our daily dose of music. The original MTV will never be duplicated. They really did only plya music video's, no game shows, no pimpin your ride, no Road Rules or all that muk. Simply the music of the day set to video. They now own many countless video channels and spinnoffs of video channels, but are not dedicated as they once were to simply music video. Bummer!

But today VH1 Classic, owned by MTV is playing the entire first day of the original MTV broadcast. Been watching it off and on. Kind of funny to look back at the clothes and the music and hair. And think of how it influanced the world.

Anyway, Happy Birthday to the original MoonMan.

In my old band, myself and lead guitarist (Jeff)were shocked when the rythem guitaris/vocalist (Jason) didn't associate MTV with Dire Straits... but he was about 5 years younger than us...

Me: I think a good guitar tone to go for on the recording would be like Dire Straits
Jason: Who are they?
Me: They did that MTV song
Jason: What?!
Jeff: you know... (singing) I want my MTV
Jason: What the hell are you talking about?!
Me: I think I have their tape some place...
Jason: TAPE?!

We broke up shortly after too :)

I cant even count the number of haircuts I had because Mary had seen them on MTV. Yes, I was dating a stylist at the time when MTV first came out. Kind of nifty to have your own personal stylist in those days. Then I quite playing live shortly after meeting her.

But it did introduce the world to alot of music they might not have seen or heard.

Yup, I remember the day that MTV first aired. I was awaiting it for nearly a month or so when I first heard the sdvertisements. Just not what it used to be . . . ofcourse, the entire industry isn't either. Moonman . . . nice, I just caught that. I can't even think of the current animated-logo.

I know we had an all night party to watch it. It was such a big deal, and something very cool at the time. I know I have hours of video tape of the concerts and even just the videos from way back then. The boyz used to drag em out and watch em. Not so much anymore. But it was funny to watch it some yesterday afternoon and evening to see what used to be on there. Ultravox had several really odd videos as did some other bands. And even some really bad off the wall stuff was playing as well. They even had a Lee Ritenour video that played. A freaking Jazz musician on MTV playing a Jazz tune. Its a pity they dont have that wide of an audiance anymore.

I dont know if they even have any kind of symbol like the MoonMan anymore, other then for the MTV vido music award they give out.
