i remember the days of no mic stands. for rehearsal situations, we would duct tape the mic to a broom stick and shove the stick down into a cardboard box filled with firewood and a chainsaw.

one thing you could try for a home studio, maybe, is to put two or three eyehooks in your ceiling then run twine down to the mic and tape/tie it on, so it hangs in space at a nice angle near you. maybe make some kind of a small carrier for the mic, to tie the twine to and to mount it on. a small piece of wood, with more eyehooks in it, something like that. some kind of broomstick arrangement could work too if you dont want to screw up the ceiling, because that idea is admittedly ghetto.

Mic stands are cheap. Musician's Friend sells On-Stage stands and their house brand stands for less than $20. That's for a tripod stand with a boom and everything!

But for right now...if its a dynamic mic, just try using it hand-held. A condensor would probably be too sensitive to jostling to get away with doing this tho.

But my best advice would be to beg or borrow $20 + shipping and just order a stand online...its a worth-while investment because you'll use it in your studio from now on.

i used to wedge it inbetween two couch cushons...they hold it pretty well inplace...it worked well for me when recording acoustic guitar, it's kinda funny singin' to a couch too. heh....they don't call it engineering for nothin'!

Ya mean the job of holding up the mic? well, better than a broomstick shoved into a box, but I gotta say, I've done it too!

Here's one,get some traffic cones, cut a hole at the point, insert the mikes, then gaffa tape the cones to the bands faces. The bad points are,you can't see,and if used on stage the band looks like a flock of birds.

The most stupid thing i ever did back in pre-stand days was attach my mic to a cymbal stand and sing crouching, everytime he hit the cymbal my headache got worse and worse.

Yes, broomsticks, clasping between my legs, hanging from washing stands, hanging over a door with something weighty the other side, we even tried taping the mic to the bassist's shoulder.

I got an old lamp held together with duct tape with a condensor duct taped to that as a mic stand right now. it's in my pics.
