Jul 27, 2006 10:11 am It was a mod to take out the transformer by melting away the "goo", I think its silicon, inside the lower part of the mic.
The issue, 52, said that it had increased low end, and took some of the midrange away, making it sound more like a sm7. The only downside was that the mic output was down about 10 to 20 dBs. I have a 57 with a broken plastic casing so i was thinking of trying it on that.

Jul 27, 2006 09:10 pm I have heard them with the mod. Yes it does have some good sound after. No it isnt really tough to do. Just have patience and go slowly with it.

Jul 29, 2006 10:56 am The one I heard was used on toms and snare, it really added some oomph to the sound.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Jul 31, 2006 11:47 pm Well, a burn from a sodering iron and a couple days later gives me the end product of a newly modded sm57.
The first thing I noticed when compared to my "stock" 57 was that it was more solid and more ballsy. It was also quite a big drop in output by about 20db. Overall though it was worth it.
