ok, im working with a yamaha mg16/4 to an audiophile 2496. i am having problems with monitering with the metronome when recording drums. im using closed akg k-55 headphones. my problem is that when recording drums the only way i can hear the metronome is when i use the pfl button. the drawback is when im listening to the click i can also hear all of my drum mics therefore it cancels out the metronome sound. i literally cant hear it at all until i stop playing. when i turn up the headphones the drums turn up and cancel it out until my ears are bursting trying to hear the metronome. ive tried a bunch of different routing possibilities and nothing seems to really do the trick.

i'd make a click track, or a simple drum track, and mix it down to a wave file. use some sort of drum sequencer, or drum program (or machine) to make a quick and simple one.

make it longer than you'll need, as you don't want to get caught without it at the end.

nothing fancy, just a boom, tap, kind of thing, with maybe a 1/4 note hihat.

Now, in your multitracker, import the wave file as the first thing, and make sure it's playing back for you.

Now do the record thing, with the drum-click track playing loud, but in the software, turn down the incoming to outgoing volume. I don't know where that is for the 2496, but I could do it on my 1010lt, so i'm sure there's a spot to do it.

This way the drum mics should be quiet, as set by you, and you can turn up the volume on the drum-click track.

Or use cowbell as a click track. That really cuts through a lot =)

hth, good luck

I'll assume your still using Cubase. Are you sending the click track driectly using Cubases metronome? That should go out on your 2496 regular outputs. and I would suggest sending the line out of the 2496 to maybe the 15/16 input on your mixer. Also you should not have to push the PFL to hear the click track. That is called Pre-Fader Listen and is stricly for setting up the mixer's gain stage. It can be used to listen to the direct sound of an input channel as well, but is really only for setting up the gain on the mixer.

Do you have your mixer channels with the drums on going out the group 1/2 outputs? That is really the best way to do it. You will need to have the 1/2 buttons depressed on the channels with the drum mics only. It sounds like you have something plugged in wrong if your having to use the PFL to listen to the click. This set up should allow you to press the group 1/2 button on the control room/headphone section and hear everything at once.
