Cakewalk Sonar 4 & VSTs

Please help before I'm driven mad! I'm new at all this, so I hope it doesn't sound too stupid and naive, but I'm sure there must be a fairly simple way achieve this...

I'm using various VSTs with Cakewalk Sonar 4, and at times I want to automatically change the setting from one preset to another... for example, in Edirol Orchestral, I needed to change from solo violin vibrato to solo violin spiccato.

From trying (unsuccessfully) to make sense of the help files, I guess it has something to do with controllers, but much beyond that and I'm lost.

Could anyone help me out in simple straightforward language, please?

the simple way would be to add the VST to a second track with the new preset...

Thanks... yes, I thought of that, but then it seemed kinda messy. Do you know if there's a better way?

I am sure there is some sysex messages you can send to the VST to change it's patch on the fly, but I don't like doing that personally, I like to keep each sound on it's own track.

Hmmm. Well, I suppose it would make life a lot easier. Okay thanks, in that case, maybe I'll just do it that way in future.

Hey Pilgate, yes there is a way to write a patch change into the sequance by using the event list view or the Insert patch/bank change command. If the synth isnt listed in your instrument lists though you will have to know exactly what patch number you want and fill that in.

dB is correct though that it is much easier to control the events by simply inserting another instance of the synth on another track. IT gives you much more control and allows you to do cross fades and the like if needed.

Hi, Thanks for the info, but it still doesn't seem to work. If I'm just using MIDI, I can change the patch fine with "insert patch change", but when using a VST, that instruction isn't passed on to the VST instrument.

I really only wanted to use it in a situation like putting together... say, a sax solo. I may want the solo to include several sax sounds (breathy, raspy or whatever). Well, it seemed more sensible to have all the notes of the solo on one track, then just change the patches as needed, instead of spreading the solo across 2 or 3 tracks.

Well, I think I should just give up on that idea!

Thanks again.

I guess I should add that some VSTi's dont work with patch automation. So depending on the synth it might not work that way.
