Techno, House, D&B samples

I'm trying to get my friend a good set-up for electronic dance/club style music. Her budget is around $600 but the less the better. I have the sequencer and MIDI controller worked out already. But she wants to make her own stuff from scratch without just assembling pre-made loops. I tried to locate a company that sells just samples to manipulate but they all come with pretty much all loops.

My thinking is that if she wants it all original, then she would end up needing to spend alot more to get seperate synths and a drum machine or software etc...So do any of you know about a company that just sells samples in these genres that can be played with a MIDI controller, or of any other way that she can accomplish what she is trying to do?

Thanks in advance.

well basically samples are loops... if she wants to make origional stuff she'll need some sort of synth... there are however software synths... and you can take normal sounds and mutilate them to make thing interesting.

Well my familiarity with samples is mostly based on the orchestral libraries which are not loops, but recorded samples of real instruments which can then be played on a MIDI controller. I suppose they dont really make that for synth based stuff...that really would make no sense. What I kinda meant was, is there some type of all in one workshop for dance music. I know they make em but most are very cheap quality. I guess I was just curious to see whats out there.

I may just suggest a seperate drum and soft synth software. Does anyone know of some good soft synths. Maybe some with good presets that are easier to manipulate?

Goldenmean, I just gotta say one word.

Project 5 version 2!

I dont think she would be lacking for much with that. As it comes with all the synths to do whatever you want in that genre. And she would have all the tweaking power she would need just by adding some freeware synths to back up the allready powerfull line up that comes with P5. And yes it records and edits audio as well, with its own loop editor and what have you.

And it would be under her budget as well since you allready got the controller worked out.

wow sounds great..hehe even for myself. I will have to go and try to find some demos to listen to. Would using this eliminate the need for a sequencer like Sonar or Live? Keep in mind she also needs drums, I don't know if Project 5 takes care of that or not.

Thanks for the tip!

Yep, there are demo's right on Cakewalks or P5's site. As well there is a demo version of the software, not sure what synths come with it though in demo mode.

But yes, it is a sequancer just as in Sonar. As well it records and edits audio and has tons of effects and synths. And their are 2 differant drums machines in there as well as a sampler type unit.

You can find the trailer as well as the web demo here. www.project5.com

Click on reviews and then it will bring you to a page you can click through to all the info on the synths and whatever.

As well its on Cakewalks main site.

Oh ya, I forgot to state as well it is not only a ReWire client but can act as a reWire host as well. So you get the best of both worlds.

not only am i a host, i'm also a client! HA!

yeah go with that, and get lots of acoustic drum samples (the higher the quality the better) pitch 'em up a few steps (sometimes even an octave!) and a bit of fuzz, and tons of tape saturation, and BAM! go to town on the keyboard playin' beats with your fingers. instant dnb sound.

also acoustic stand up bass samples are good aswell (if ya dig the roni size (sp?) type sound)

sampling (sounds manily, not loops) is key, then later get some sample libraries...the more the better!

ummm a good turntable might be nice to have aswell.

grrr i want project 5! but have Reason and just can't spend the money on it.....reason is almost an alternative to p5, it can spit out some dnb though (but i recomend running it INSIDE of sonar).

Pssh. Thread officially over. I'm stealing this girls money and buying P5 for myself!

Still got a question though. With the sampler that p5 has...could one do some feild recording and and drop in the .wav files and then sequence them? I am also unclear as to what exact piece of virtual hardware allows you to use purchased samples. For instance, If I just have a string pluck wav. How can I sequence that sound with different pitch etc.?

oh yeah definately doable...the software sampler will read .wav's from your hard drive, you can edit the crap out of them before or after...the sampler will assign the samples to key's on your keybaord...it's quite easy and simple.

Wasn't db supposed to give a couple copies of Project 5 away last October or around then? I thought I was supposed to win one of those (at least in my own mind). What happened with that, I never saw any news.

Yep, they were given away. I cant remember who won though either.

Goldenmean, yes indeed. You can use Cyclone that way. I use it more for ht eone shot type stuff that doesnt need pitch change. But as well the DS864 will allow it. But I would suggest using Dimension for that. As you will be able to twist the living daylights our of anything you load into it. IT does both subtractive and addative synthesis. So you can load a bird chirp and it will pitch it for you up and down. Or create your own percusion stuff as well.

Any more questions just ask.
