Im lookign at buying a yamaha Mg 16/4 mixer. now its definaly got enough mic pre's and all that is good, but im not sure about the signal routing. when i comes to mixers i dont really understand it though im sure i should by now.

What i want to be able to do is add a compressor/ reverb to some of the tracks, how would i do this? i really just dont know how to us aux sends/returns and insert I/O's. what is an insert I/O? can anybody point me to some sort of diagram how to use this stuff? or jsut explain it well? haha

thanks a ot guys

Insert points for dynamics/EQ. You'll need to buy a special 'Y' cable that splits the insert into both a send and a return. Send goes to input, return goes to output.

Post fader aux's for fx. Aux output - FX In - FX Out - Line in on any spare channels/ Aux returns. That way, when you turn up an aux and your fader, FX returns on your line in channels.

here's a clip from the mg16/4 book.

There's a bunch of useful stuff in their manual, explaining balanced/unbalanced, inserts, mic placements, etc.

You plug the TRS jack into the insert point on the mixer, then the other two jacks plug into the input and output of the effects (lets say compressor).

This way the signal exits out the insert point, flows into the compressor input, then gets processed inside the compressor, the exits the compressor output, and back into the mixer through the insert point (but on the other contact point of the TRS jack).

The difference between insert, and FX send and return, is that when using the insert point, all signal has to go through the effect. Conversely, when using the FX section, you can dial in the amount of signal going into the effect, plus you can dial in how much signal is coming back from the effect.

Examples would be for insert: compressor, EQ.

Example for FX would be chorus, reverb, delay, flange.
