Digital Mixer?? Digital Control Surface??

I was reading an article in Keyboard or EQ magazine(yes I subscribed through Amazon via this site)yesterday and it was talking about buying equipment for a home(digital) studio and the article basically said that instead of getting an analog mixer, compressor's, and whatever else comes integrated in a digital mixer(can't remember the rest of the stuff right now) buy a digital mixer because the prices have dropped drastically as of late and you could probably save money in the end. I was just curious about what the consensus was because I am going to ugrade my Sonar and was planning on getting a digital control surface like the CM Labs Motormix(and maybe eventually the dashboard)or tha Tascam US-428 or something like that and was just curious if I should get one of these or a digital mixer or what? Thoughts? Comments? Gripes? Complaints? Suggestions??

I just wanted to add the fact that I don't have a mixer yet.

personally, most small home project studios like most of us have I don't see it being a big money saver since most software (Sonar, Cubase, etc.) have mixers in the app that are fully automatable plus the apps also have effects and plugin compatibility to accept more.

Therefore I persnally don't subscribe to that train of thought, but, that said, I can see others having a difference of opinion. I guess it comes down to what works best for your goal, your studio, your music making process and your budget.

I saw the mention of the US428 in your list. I purchased one when I first started recording and it has basicly been shelved. As a control surface I did not enjoy it much. It was more combersome to me than working directly with Cubase via mouse and keyboard. It also suffered from numerous lock ups. The A to D converters and or preamps are not the best to my ear either. I have went to an analog mixer and seperate A to D's. I keep it around for an interface into my laptop and for midi interface. Not worth the money in my estimation. I can't talk about other digital mixers or control surfaces however the 428 is the only one I've tried.

Hope this helps.

Yep, you can find the Tascam's for cheap now. They did however do an upgrade so it is not all bad. But, let me tell you about another control surface out there that I will definately add to my desk in the future. It is the Event EZbus, Audio interface, fully programable control surface, 3 midi I/O port's, and it also function's as a digital mixer. This thing has everything but a urinal on it.

But just to make thing's very clear, I have 3 Behringer analog mixer's and I will not part with them anytime soon. So I will say this to you, Start with a good mixer that will fullfill your need's and when the time come's you can add on. I know you will be adding some synth's so a good analog mixer will be very handy. I don't know what I would do without them.
