so i was lyin' in bed this mournin' and there was total silence in the room, but my ringing in my ear seemed pretty darn loud, i know i've never really bothered with plugs or anything until i was about 19 or 20....but this got me thinking, was the ringing in my ear accually loud? i could extend my arm and rub my fingers lightly together and hear every detail...so maybe the ringing just seemed loud since there wasn't anyother noizes to compair it too...like right now, i'm in a room with 5 computers, and a big digital printer all humming away so i can't hear the ringin' unless i plug my ears....i guess what i'm tryin' to say is how do you tell exactly how loud the ringing is? my ears are sensitive, so maybe i'm just fully aware of it whereas most wouldn't be bothered...i know what i got now is permanent, and will only get worse if i don't be carefull...but how bad is bad?

There is a stage of hearing dammage in which your ears get more sensitive... then again, it could also be vascular ? Do you smoke alot ? How's your blood pressure ?

Quote:
Some people hear ringing or other noises in their ears immediately following exposure to excessive noise, like right after a concert, but the sound is temporary. Other people report hearing a slight noise all the time if they listen for it, but most of the time cannot distinguish the noise over all the other sounds in their environment. Other factors can affect the severity of the condition from patient to patient, such as different degrees of hearing loss and different kinds of noises heard. Interestingly, the loudness of the tinnitus, when measured in a laboratory setting, did not correlate to the severity of the tinnitus as rated by the patients themselves. Every person has his or her own level of tolerance to the tinnitus sounds. It is a very personal and individual experience.

hmmm veddy interesting....i always thought it was somewhat 'normal' to have some degree of ringing....mine dosn't really bother me at all, other than the fact i know it's there...but it never is so loud that it covers up other ambient noizes....woah! i just remembered, about once or twice in my right ear, the ring got real loud outta nowhere for about 5 seconds then went away...to this day i have no idea what triggers it. but it has happened a few times....

damnit, i have gone outta my way for the past 5 or 6 years to keep my ears healthy....oh well, i don't think i'll be needing to brush up on my sign language skills any time soon.

Just getting over the worst flu bug ever (it's been about a month...). One of the symptoms was excessive ringing in the ears/partial deafness (fluid build up, I guess). 'er indoors got tired of me saying "What?" every time she asked me something ["Can you take the trash out?" - "What?" etc.]

Still only 90% recovered. Not good when you're into recording audio!
It's driving me batsh*t. I completely empathize with those with tinnitus. Right now, I can hear the ringing over the background noise (left ear is the worst).

WYD: Is the ringing a new thing? Have you been sick?
Have you been taking Tylenol or Advil type drugs? They can cause ringing in the ears. Is it something you've had for a while?

i used to have some ringing as a kid, but it would come and go.

those days are over, thanks to ministry, the loudest band on the planet.

there are new movements afoot to warn peeps about the dangers of loud music. apparently some major stars are on board to start doing PSA's. i cant remember where i heard this.

at my local loud club, i try to always stuff napkins into my ears. i have long hair, so you cant see it if i do it just right. but im happy to see other guys walking around with napkins shoved in their ears too.

Interesting enough, as it was explained to me, the ringing results when the follicles (the proper terminology escapes me at the moment) relating to extremely high frequencies are damaged. This leads to a state of "always on" wherein those nerves are always "hearing" this noise. Hence the ringing.

Then again, this is the guy who left a Megadeth concert last year deaf in his left ear and almost the same in his right. Prayers of thanks were being submitted to any god who would take credit when that subsided...much as Megadeth was righteous cool. =)

Y'a know, WYD... pin-prick-hemorages, that are sometimes caused by an increased intake of toxins have been known to cause this symptom as well . Perhaps your new place has something about it's general surroundings that's making you react ?... or perhaps you've been partying just a teeny-tiny-bit too much ?

It's quite possible .

Maybe it was a concert that you'd seen at that age ? OR a good fireworks show that you were a bit too close to ? OR perhaps even swimming-related ?

Hey wyd, I get that burst of tone in my right ear sometimes as well. It throws me off balance when I can only hear out one ear haha.

I'm 19 and I've generally been very careful about protecting my hearing, especially lately. I know exactly what you're talking about with the ringing, WYD (although yours might be a bit more prominant than mine). I think everyone has that, they just ignore it most of the time. There really is no such thing as silence. I know that I've had that quiet ringing (it's not even really "ringing" so to speak) since way before I ever played music, and I've been playing music since 7th grade.

I was worrying about the same thing a few weeks ago, and everyone I've asked seems to say that they hear the same thing when it's totally quiet, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Actually, most people I ask say they don't have it at first, but then after I explain it to them, they start to notice it.

I have the occational random ear cut-out, too. That seems to be fairly normal, as well.

Profesionally done earplugs just for musicians are the best investment you can make if you are still playing live. But the pre-made ones work just fine as well. In my case it is far too late, but to prevent any fruther damage I had a pair made when they molded me for my aids. They work a charm and funny thing is you can still carry on a normal conversation while wearing them.

But trust me on this, the older guys allready know but for you younger guys and the newbies, protect your ears. They are much more valuable then you think.

For me now, I mix at much louder levels then I used to. All because I didnt know then what you guys should know now.

Sounds like good advice, Noize. Your ears are definitely everything. I was planning on getting some of those custom plugs, but I've finally managed to get used to the hardware store variety. They don't bother me at all anymore.
