Synchronization question...

I recently bought an 1820 EMU interface and I have hooked up my external synth to the 1010 PCI card via Optical S/PDIF. I notice random click/pop noises in the signal and the manual says this is a common occurence when digital devices are out of sync. I really have no experience with time clocks like SMPTE etc.

The DSP patchmix software says that my clock source is internal so I am assuming it is using some low grade windows application to do the job. Has this problem occured with anyone else? Do I need some kind of time clock to fix this? If so, can I get a software version that will work fine or what?

Internal means it is using its own clock. Which should be on the 1010 PCI card itself. You may need to check and make sure your recording application is set to use the same clock device. You should be able to select that in the preferances section of your app. Set both playback and recording timing master to Audio and that should do the trick.

hmm, well the clicks and pops occur without the DAW application in use. EX. I have my Roland synth connected to the PCI card via S/PDIF Optical toslink and then I am just monitoring that input with the headphone jack on the Audiodock. It is here already that I notice the numerous clicks and pops. Any ideas? I really want to figure this out before my 30 days is up to return it if there is a problem that I can't fix...

Well, pops and clicks going direct through usually mean a bad cable or something similar. Have you tried going direct through the analog inputs and seeing what happens there?

I have actually fixed this problem, I found the setting within the DSP software which allowed me to make the external digi device the master source. Now my only problem with this thing is after about an hour or so of listening to an ASIO signal like a media player, it will start clicking and poping on that! even when the clock is set back to internal, its pretty weird.

It may also be your DSP Patchmix program. Its default settings are sometimes a little hot. If you're going in with the optical, then you probably are just clipping on the input signal. Back off the main slider, and the slider on the S/PDIF channel.
I've been using a digital input a lot lately, and it worked for me.
Other than that, do you have huge amounts of load on the CPU? That can cause some gnarly clips and pops too. Too many VST effects?

its not clipping, the meters are only going up half way (and yes Patchmix is VERY hot) but I actually realized that everytime i reboot my PC, the DSP software kept reseting the clock to external so it was out of sync with the ASIO. That would obviously cause this problem but regardless, I am listening to all sorts of signals each night to basically test and varify the quality of the unit to make sure it has no problems.

I believe I have figured it all out though. Thanks for your input Noize and TallChap :)

Media Player, Winamp and all the rest do not use ASIO. They either use the generic windows driver or in some cases WDM.

Oh yeah, my mistake, it was direct wave. But now a most unfortunate event has occured. Tonight, even with all settings sound including the clock, I experiences the pops again. I was using windows media player and I did notice it choke up a little once in a while so I am testing with itunes for a few days to see if it happens again.

Ugh, I just want this thing to work. I know CPU overload is not an issue, I am only running the media player and I have a single web page up.
