I do landscaping to pay for my music career and I'm starting up next week. There is one guy who wants me to do his house but he is such a freak'n penny pincher I told him I was too busy. I still have to do some reseeding on his lawn because I couldn't think of an excuse and it should only take 30min... The hard part was the guy was shocked that I wouldn't even submit a bid ...though I was initially thinking $2k ...and I had to "explain" <cough> <cough> that I already picked up enough houses to be full time and can't fit his in...even though it is _just_ a one time deal and doesn't include the weekly maintenance...

He's a young stock broker... I hate working for "new rich".. they get there by being cheap.

I remember something similar, when I was a manager of a Papa John's Pizza store, people would always try to scam free food from us by saying they never got their order and when I would look it wouldn't be in the system and then they'd blame it on the order taker or sometimes they would say they ordered something completely different from what they got and expect to get what they say plus keep what they got originally. I wasn't going to let this one person get away with it and after arguing for nearly thirty minutes I said with all swears excluded, "don't ever call my store back again if you want some pizza so bad call dominos, 720 3030" which is the number for the closest one. Well low and behold I have no job now, are you hiring?

I don't know zek, young penny pincher may have contacts with older, more easy going guy, with big $$$ lawn to maintain.

I'd think of it as networking, and keep that 'people' face on.

Guys like that may be crankety to work with, but they may give great references.

Or not.

Dude, I have turned down many jobs, or, possibly tacked the "pain in the *** tax" onto the bid, so, if accepted I made a load, if not, then I saved myself a massive hassle.

A wise businessman has to size up his possible clients, not only sell yourself to them, but selling them to yourself...some clients just ain't worth the hassle.

I don't live by my dad's "never turn down work" thought process...

heh yeah, that $2k I was thinking of included a 50% PIA tax...

...but if money can't buy happieness then it doesn't pay for stress.

Agreed. I have dealt with many big headed arogant people in days gone by. IF they like the work and try to come back I will jack the price up. Other times I just say no. It isnt really worth it at this point in my life to add stress when not needed.

Ok, i liked the topic of this post haha
Im notorious without any exaggeration here for punching my employers. I got fired from about 3 jobs when i was a kid for doing just that, and 2 more in college for arguing. After a while i started think maybe its not that many employers are a**holes but maybe im just a bit tooo stubborn...

I'd say you likely need some anger management classes.

Punching a boss isn't "stubborn" it's aggressive behavior that is just...well, kinda childish and a sign of some serious issues.

And understand this is coming from somebody that spent most of the night last night in the gym getting punched and punching for body conditioning...

I'm fairly stubborn myself but it's not like I can't take direction... I had a great time in the military but I was a Legal NCO which was fairly specialized and "off in my own little world."

I only ran into problems once while at Fort Campbell... but that was trying to work with an organization so screwed up it's really hard to explain.... each law office in the militiary is different... they were just doing things wrong :) ...they meant well... but you can't have a system that takes a week and a half to "authorize an Article 15" which is undue command influence (and therefore illegal) when the actual legal review isn't supposed to occure until AFTER it is served and during the APPEALS process before the Battalion Commander makes a decision... this allwos Company Commanders to tell the "system" this soldier is a "piece of ****" while no real punishment actually occures until after the appeal... I wanted to throttle that CrimLaw Director of coming up with that system. :)

Well, it's not unnatural to want to hit somebody or just explode, hell, I think that is something that totally normal. But actually exploding into a rage or actually striking someone is a big red flag of some emotional issues or just immaturity.

or both.

dB speaks the truth here Crux, and it shouldn't be glossed over if you're getting fired from jobs for violence.

Hopefully it's something that was resolved / worked through and doesn't pose a problem anymore.

Well i was 14-16, and yes i had serious issues and ive grown up, but i look back on it with laughs. i was a pretty bad kid growing up, but thast my baggage i guess. Anyhow now, i sitll have a huge problem wiht authority but i find it much more satisfying to win in an intellectual debate then a fighting match, the look on a superiors face when they just have nothing to say is priceless.
Nowadays i do jobs with the mindset that im 20 yrs old and i sitll have a few years worth of that futile "rock star" dream u know? so i only do things that fit me for now, i dont burn all my bridges though, im studying my masters already in translation, but i always keep in mind that music is my life, and jobs r just money so i can pay for equipment and such thats why i dont take the bs taht alot of employers dish out. Maybe when im a little older, and the dream is looking bleak ill start straightening my tie.
This became a rant hahaha

The look on the face of a smartass kid who thinks they know what's going on that I just fired is pricless, as well . They're my favorite to cut-loose, 'cause it usually means the end of me dealing with someone who 'thinks' they know better, but isn't getting the whole picture . Chances are that blank look that you're getting, is probably that superior pondering just how to go about getting rid of the thorn that's in his buisnesses side .

We have an amazing turn over rate .

Fair enough Hue, i was rollin for that one
But i usually stick it out til its really horrible. I had an employer once, i was his sons english tutor, and he gambled so much, he was a bookie, and one day cops came to the house and arrested him infront of his own kids. And when i tried to quit the next week (he got off somehow fast) he was just like, no no, i got more money if thast what you want, and i just laid into him. Thats pretty justified right?

I worked for one guy in England who was just a total bastard. I think I was the only person who DIDN'T beatthe hell out of him after I left. Many, many did. Yeah, he was that much of a d***.

I'm always surprised when a boss has that "I'm never wrong, and I'll never admit to being anything other than perfect" attitude. The way they think they deserve my respect. Well, you have to earn my respect, not buy it.

Much respect! Its a funny thing,I enjoy lots of respect outside work and give it out, but at work if you believe in 'life after work that earns cash' people chip away at you and think you're strange.
