Changed hardware - static issues

Hi people; first time poster - have a question.

Only ever used Wavelab as a means to backup (unfulfilled potential I know)princicpally old records and old tapes onto digital. My old PC worked well and I had no issues.

However, the old PC died and I am now using a laptop for the same purpose - a Tosh Satellite Pro (an older model). Got my 3.5mm to Phono jack and plugged it into the Mic socket on the front of the laptop, and sound comes through fine, but... there is also a underlying static being redcorded as well. My first schoolboy error was that I didn't deselect the Microsoft SoundMapper audio card, which I have now done - I selected the only other option available, which was the Yamaha AC-XG WDM Audio card. However, the static problem still exists.

I conducted a control recording (unplugging all external cables, and recording nothing) and the static is still there.

My conclusion is that either a) my laptop is crap and there is nothing I can do about it or b) I have somehow missed a simple setting in the Options/Preferences tab. I really hope it is the latter, so that I can get on with backing up my analog music.

Can anybody help me?
Sean

Don't plug it in to your mic in, should be going to a line in...different signal types and levels.

Suspected that might be the case, but that is the only option I have on this P.O.S. laptop.

Does that mean that I am stuffed until I changed computers?

Thanks,
Sean

Sounds like that is the case. I am amazed that there isnt a line input on it as well as the mic input. That is something almost every laptop and PC on the planet should have. At least if they were only including one it should be a line in, not a mic in.

my dell 600m has only mic in, and headphone 1/8" jack.

I've run into several times when I was stymied because of it.

I got the tascam us122 to get around that.
