Question regarding Cool Edit Pro version 2.1

I'm a professional musician and a complete newbie at digital recording who just purchased Cool Edit Pro (version 2.1) software. My computer is a one year old Dell Dimension 3000.

I'm having a problem recording on the multi track view page where for track one I've inserted a Windows PCI wav.

What I'm trying to do is listen to the playback of the wav on track one while recording my instrument with line in on track two which is coming out of a mixer.

Every time I hit the record button I get the following message. "Try converting the sample type to a setting compatible with the sound card or choosing a different device e.g.(mapper) under settings/devices and try again." I get the same message if I insert a midi in track one.

I sure would appreciate it it if someone could help me out and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Many thanks, Neil

Are you using the in built sound card, or do you have a dedicated sound card? I used 2.1 and never cae across that error.

For multitracking have you got both tracks armed for recording in their individual control boxes. The wave colours change depending on if they are armed for recording or playback. One should be say green for playback and one reddish for recording. (assuming you are in the multi tracking screen and not edit view)

I got the message just the other day. I was using Line 6's toneport as the input with my m-audio audiophile as an output and whenever i hit record i got that. I know both soundcards work fine because i tried them in a different app. I simply logged off, went to a differnt user in XP and it worked fine. Theres probably a better way to fix this but that worked for me.

Thanks for your reply Kaos62.

I'm using the original sound card that came with my computer. I'm attemting to use the mulitrack screen where for track one I've tried importing (inserting)a wav from my hard drive and even tried inserting from a track that I just recorded using edit view.

When I try playing back track one (hilited in green) and arm track 2 so that the "R" is lit up,nothing happens when I hit the record button and a few seconds later it says "The specified format is not supported or cannot be translated. Use the capabilities function to determine...followed by " "Try converting the sample type to a setting compatible with the sound card or choosing a different device e.g.(mapper) under settings/devices and try again."

I'm assuming that the Cool Edit Pro 2.1 software is capable of allowing me to do ALL of my recording using just the multitrack screen and be able to listen to track one playing back while recording on track 2.

I've been able to record using the edit view screen and then transfer the tracks to the multitrack screen but I can't listen to track one playing back when I use the edit view screen to record. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, this is correct. You can playback while recording to a new track.

Regarding your problem, I had something similar happen but I'm having troubles remembering what I did to fix it. Have you tried bouncing the track (that you want to playback) into a new track? I think this may have something to do with the resolution of your session vs. the resolution of the wav that you are importing. I would try to bounce the track and see if you can get it working. Not sure if it that will work but it can't hurt to try.

Thanks for your suggestion. I just tried bouncing the track and the same message keeps appearing. I'm really confused as to why this is occuring.

Well it has me scratching my head as well. Are you able to record in MT at all? IE: start a new session, arm a track and record or is that messed too?

Here is a link that may help. (Similar problem is discussed)

Yes, it was setting of the device that cause the trouble! Thank you all for turning my attention to this. I didn't even suspect that the current device that CE2K used was invalid. It tried to use "Modem #0 Line playback" to output and record sound, that was ofcourse impossible for any kind of sound quality, but it's funny why CE2K, in the couple of recent reinstallations, set this device on the top of the list of other sound devices and used it by default, since i had that same modem device long time now, and CE2K always used the proper device by default. Nevermind, i've changed the device settings to a proper sound device and everything is ok now.

Hello again B Double E Double R-U-N. I hope that you don't think that I'm trying to take advantage of you but if you're up to it I have another question for you to ponder over.

On a new session I attempted to insert a midi file for track one on my multi track screen and played my instrument along with the midi track on track two.

It recorded fine but there was a time delay between the midi track and the track that I just finished recording my pedal steel on. In other words the midi track and the wav track that I had just created were out of sync.

Do you know if my Cool Edil Pro 2.1 has a workaround for this? I couldn't find anything that I could make heads or tails of in my 340 page instruction manual.

I attempted to download two different midi to wav file converters (demos) from different online companies but neither one of them worked with my sound card.

Whether you have an answer for me or not this time I sure do appreciate your help.

Thanks

Neil

********PROBLEM SOLVED********

Sorry, I guess I should have spent more time working on this myself before posting.

The reason that I wasn't able to convert my midi files to wavs was because my sound card was defaulting to Modem #0 Line playback. Ironically this was the cause of my earlier problem.

Ok I have the same problem here. I recorded something using cubase, i used my master keyboard and a VSTi. afterwards i exported it as .wav and tried to open this file in cooledit pro. But when i try to play it there, i get the same error as mentioned earlier. But, as far as i can tell, i put my external soundcard as first priority for playing and recording. I haven't even seen the modem #0 line playback that was mentioned here.

Is there anyone who can help me here? I'm really stuck.

So what are you hoping to accomplish by loading the mixdown into Cool Edit?

I'm just curious what you can do with Cool Edit that you can't do with Cubase. You might be able to avoid the problem altogether by simply using Cubase to work on the stereo .WAV file and leave the ancient Cool Edit program alone.

I had a similar question, that may or may not have been answered already (sorry guys I'm new to the thread.)

I just bought a BLUE "Snowball" USB mic which works fantastically, except that it won't pick anything up in multi-track mode. I can record fine in EV, but when I switch out of it it doesn't register any sound.

If I try to use the Microphone-in on my comp to record anything with a pick-up its fine in MT, just not the mic I bought.

Any suggestions?

So......

What software exactly are you using? They've mentioned 3 or 4 here.

And some of us might not know what EV is as we don't use the software you are using. So a little more detail might help.
