Today I had to make a friend a rough version of a song hes putting vocals on.
At the moment i have not access toany matering software so to raise the volume level i put double the amount of each track to double the volume(eg.8 guitar tracks instead of 4,2 drums instead of 1 ect).
Is this an "acceptable" way of increasing volme or will it cause the sound quality to suffer?

Mar 14, 2006 02:40 pm All of the mixing software you list in your profile will accept VST plugins. Just load your song, put a compressor or limiter VST on the master bus, and start turning knobs.
There are more refined ways to increase perceived volume on a song, but if its a rough quickie, just compress it and turn up the makeup gain until its the desired volume.
Mar 14, 2006 02:52 pm yes i have tried compression.
its just a question.
Mar 14, 2006 02:53 pm Layering can have some powerful impact on the sound, but I would not recommend using it across the board to boost the level of everything.

That's probably in the area of 'if it sounds good, it is good'.
There's no set in iron rules here, sometimes your method will be better for your desired result, sometimes not. Listen to the result, and hear for yourself.
Doubling can lead to different benefits, like WYD mentioned, though for just volume, I'll use compression with increased output gain, then run through a master limiter on the main fx channel.
