What device for recording the birdies?

What (digital) device could I use for portable recording? I looked into hard disk recorders a while back, such as the creative jukebox and the archos somethingelse, but I was wary of the hard disk noise issue. (And found no records online to persuade me that any noise was minimal.) However, these items were in my price range. What were not in my price range were devices such as the tascam compact flash recorder (whatever it's called), which would have suited me fine, but perhaps for its weight. I also looked at minidisc recording, but ended up getting hacked off with the lack of digital output (copyright protection?) and slow transfer speed. I don't want a horde of features, but I would like a quiet device that takes a (condenser) mic input and gives a digital output to my computer soundcard. So what would be my best route? Best wishes to all.

knowing your stated price range would help.

M audio has a new portable recording device, though it's around 500$, so that my be out.

The newer minidisc recorders (sony) have digital outputs now (i think) and are much more user friendly with moving files around.

I think they're in the 200 - 300 $ range. I'm not sure about the condensor mic inputs, but mine worked quite well with the small stereo electret mic.
