This is a pretty crazy article. It's rare to see payola written about in the present tense.

No it isnt surprising. Some of us have seen it first hand. It also goes on in the lower levels as well for corperate radio. And even the clubs in town here and elsewhere I am sure. It costs money to get yoru band into specific venues. And there it is considered legal because it is the clubs take of the ticket or cover price we pay to see differant bands. If your from out of town or new and unknown, it costs you more to play there, meaning they take more of the cover and pay you less.

It has been that way for years in all aspects of music and will never change, ever.

The musicians union used to try to make venues play fair but had no chance.Another way to get airplay which makes me squirm is songs about DJs.

Absolutely. DJ songs were funny in the 60's and early 70's as a way to come out and state the crap that went on. Now its just a lame ploy.

As for the musicians unions, they are a complete joke since they cant control what a club or radio station are doing.

There is however an alternative I hope that will sweep the nation. I think some of you may have seen me mention a radio station here that is now one year old. It is owned by MPR, (Minnesotta Public Radio) which is catoring to those of us who dont have huge record contracts and the like. They will play an absolute unknown artis druning prime time drive time. They are on the air via the net if anyone cares to have a listen to what radio should be. minnesota.publicradio.org...es/the_current/

I have been lucky enough to get several of the bands I do work for played at one time or another on this station. Not a huge deal but it at least gets stuff out there that most people might not hear. No payola involved either, if its good they will play it. The DJ's play music because they or the listeners like it, not because it is in the top 40 or they are getting cash to play it.

They do play stuff you have heard as well, but nothing from the top 40. They play everything from almost evey genre of music. You might tune in and hear a Sex Pistols tune followed by an old Johnny Cash tune.

We neeed more stations like this one.

I thought it was interesting because you never hear about it in the present tense. Everything I read about payola is in the 60's or the 80's. It's also good that it exposes some of the artists that have benefitted recently. It's sad to see people feeding the mob mentality.

"You might tune in and hear a Sex Pistols tune followed by an old Johnny Cash tune."

Now that's my kind of station.

Yeah Nioze, the public radio station here is great too . It's run by the peeps at Wayne State University, and yeah they'll play anything that's well recorded, and not top 40 .
www.wdetfm.org/ Also web-cast .

This article doesn't surprise me at all... you can tell that this is how it works, just by what gets played... and how much that crap gets played .

Quote:
"I think that's been going on a really, really long time," said Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. "I think back in the '70s, they used to pay people with hookers and cocaine, and now they're just doing it with straight-up money — so they can go out and buy their own hookers and cocaine."

Nice .

Hey, I played with Semisonic at First Avenue one night JUST before they hit it big...those guys were great musicians.

I distinctly remember an old episode of "WKRP in Cinncinati" about this exact thing...and I STILL think Bailey was hotter than Jennfier...

I think DR. Johnny Fever was everybodies patron saint back then. But indeed Bailey had the sorta naughty but nice thing going. You always wanted to know what waited around the corner with her.

Hue, I honestly have not switched the dial on my car stereo since about a month after they went on the air. Mary Lucia during drive time is an absolute pleasure with what she plays, and she's not bad looking either. The morning show is a littel bit boring but who really cares, I'm only in the car for 5 minutes anyway.

heh, that Payola thing... really doesn't surprise me. But like forty, I think it's depressing. The music industry is getting no better than politics. What happened to the little guy trying to make it on his own and succeeding without having to blow a million to just get the radio station to do what they're supposed to?

And now that I think of it, I heard that stinkin Semisonic song so much on the radio, I started to like it. Guess it works.

Those dirty buggers. Guess I'll just have to get rich and start my own radio station. Virginia doesn't have powerball though. =) hahaha

It's funny though. They just don't know when to stop. Take Fall Out Boy for example. They had to benefit from payola with the way their debut song was played. At least once an hour on the corporate stations, and a few times a day on the indy. That song was played so much that when it started, I thought it was very formulaic, not original, and that it pretty much sucked. After a while the hook grew on me. It was a catchy song. But then they continued to play it so much that now I can't stand it, and I'm putting them up there with Nickelback as one of the most annoying bands of all time.

Great topic, I've witnessed payola crap at all levels, all the way down to battle-of-bands judges when overwhelming crowd resoonse and showmanship annihilated the winner. We found out later that the judges were huddled around the indie label owner of the winner, which also had close ties with the advertising station's program directors. Why do you think the basic format of pop music hasn't changed since the 90's ? FRN's. Hey Db, funny you should say that about Semisonic, my band also opened up for them in the Flats in Cleveland right before they hit.
