PC Fans

Ok heres a bit of a situation regarding my PC fans...

My northbridge chip fan and my main cpu fan are not operating. However they do work. I know that sounds sticky but check this out...

After a temp max on my PC occured it shut itself down...(good thing). So lately I have been having it with the cover off and a clip fan blowing on my machine to cool it off...The other day I opened it up and took it apart...I plugged the fans into different fan 'outlets' and got them to work...I was overjoyed being I thought they burnt out.

So after putting **** back together and my initial boot up they worked as they should...Now they are not working again...but I know they are not fried out...Both fans work.

I am thinking its...

A: A virus on bootup made to shut my fans down so it gets really hot in order to damage something.

or

B: My psu for some reason is only suppporting the major components in my machine and is not running the fans...

I checked setup and all is fine there...I even loaded the defaults basically bringing it back to regular status...

Any opinions??

Do your fans plug directly in to the power supply or do they plug into the motherboard?

Either way, fans are cheap, maybe buy one new one and see if it helps.

Directly into the motherboard...

There 3 outlets...but only 2 fans...I essentially put the fans in different outlets and they ran...I put everything back together and they ran fine...but I booted down and the next time I booted up they didnt run...

Fans are rathe rinexpensive but I own a XPC and that heatpipe system requires a fan that has a slimmer profile than those case fans you usually buy...

The funny thing is...Tiger Direct sent me a fan I didnt order but it was on the order at no cost. I wonder if this was a suggestion to not use the heatpipe sytem...maybe I should drop a heatsink on the cpu and use the case fane they sent, to push the hot air out....the case is not big at all...11X11x14

After further investigation last night...Its the fan sockets on the mobo. There are two in close proximity of the cpu and those two do not work...

I plugged the nb-chipset fan into one of the two and it works but you gotta spin the fan to get it going. My thoughts are the heat killed the fan sockets and the one that works is further away from the cup than the other two...

All the fans themselves are operable...It sucks but after watching it closely, the pc keeps cool with the one fan running...

Well, on the upside you can get fans that plug into standard power supply plugins, so you could consider just not using the Mobo plugs (which apparantly don't work anyway) and use the power supply directly. The downside of that is that the Mobo then can not monitor the fans, but, I dunno about you, I never watch that monitoring anyway...

At least you found the issue and there are workarounds.

Good point...maybe I will do that...

I am with you tho...I only watch the fans when I have fan trouble...

One thing I do know is that I would never go without a CPU fan, a graphics card fan and at least one other fan, just to keep air moving in there...

Well I have that agp card coming so I plan on getting a fan for that. Sad part is (for now) that my agp slot and my pci are next to each other and next to the chassis...so its kinda tight...but once I go to a different recording interface itll free up a bit...
