Basic recording routing question

hey Folks,

First please forgive my lack of recording experience! I have spent numerous years in a studio, but always as a musician and not as an engineer. Recently i have started to put together a home studio on an ebay budget, and my lack of experience is starting to show. I have a Behringer MX2448 mixing board, a slew of mics of various qualities, and and am recording digitally using 2 presonus Inspire firewire interfaces. So far I pretty much have been running directly into the firewire boxs with Mics or Instruments to Cubase SX. What i would like to do is go through my board first so I can tweak the mic sound before it goes to tape... er.. hard drive. Now my board has 4 busses, and inserts (TRS conenctions send/recieve) on 16 of the 24 channels. My question is thus, not knowing a ton about routing, how do I get a signal for each mic input on my board to go out to each input on my firewire interface? (only need 4 channels at a time now, but would like to expand in the future) Do i need a patch bay? How do i use it? Do i use the busses to send out signal for 4 channels at a time? What about the inserts? I think they are pre-eq, but do I send a signal out with them?

Sorry for the long post, but I could use any advice ya'll could give.

thanks!

Welcome to HRC

read these first

www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=132

The second one will cover how you use your 4 subouts to send them to your firewire interface.

So here is a question, how to large multitrack studios handle this type of routing? Do they really have 24+ bus mixers? or do their boards have some kind of pass through for each channel?

if you're not using the inserts for anything, you can use the insert to tap signal from each channel.

Just put in a TS plug to the first click. If you insert it all the way (second click) then it'll break the signal path, which we don't want in this instance. First click will connect to the send, and give you signal pre-EQ and pre-fader.

Then you can use the sub and mains for monitoring, or other things.

Bigger boards have direct outs for each channel, I'm thinking. Plus an insert on each as well. I know some of the bigger Behringer ones do, so I'm thinking that most bigger boards have them.

I don't use a patchbay, as most of my cables get connected, and stay there. Other's here do, so it may be useful. I'd say if you don't unplug them, that it may be more trouble than it's worth.

Welcome to the HRC bandwagon =)

Hey Recognizer welcome to HRC from here as well.
As for the larger studio multitracking. There are a couple ways it gets done. Busses, yes there are desks out there with 24 busses. But most times their desks are set up with a direct out for each channel. These can be patched through other hardware or direct to tape, digital audio interfaces or what have you. My desk uses 8 busses which is usually enough for anything here. As well I can go direct out from 24 channels if needed.

Hope that answered that question.
