So I've been wanting to record my marimba pieces so I can work my musicality. It doesnt have to be perfect recordings but I wouldn't mind being able to cut something to show to people. Where would I put a mic or several to get the best sound on tape?

Two months ago, I miked a set of vibes for some live sound at a jazz concert. Although it wasnt my first choice, I ended up with two 57s about 3 or 4 feet apart. It sounded fine live and should work similar if all you want to do is cut some stuff.

57 is my go-to for glock actually, it reduces the ting of the attack a little, softens it, and i like that.

I've not recorded a marimba, but i'd probably start with an LDC in the centre and see how i go from there, probably ending up with a stereo pair i'd imagine.

agreed, if it's a busy mix (more than 12 tracks) then i'd stick to one mic, if not go stereo (matched pair) and try to accually stand where you want them to be in the mix.
