Recording Drums - a defloration

Yo Yo,

Guys. I'm recording drums tmrw. I have four questions.

1. Can I use my LDC (studio projects B3) in the kick drum? I have used it before lying flat front end facing the beater 1" from the skin. top end rolled off, set to cardiod and the -10db pad switched as I was worried about blowing it up. It sounded good but is this safe? I've heard it isn't.

2. I have an old AKG D80 dynamic. Does anybody know anything about this mic? I can't find any specs on it. Should I use this or my Senhesier 835 on the snare?

3.Which of the dynamics would be better in the kick drum if I have to move the B3 further out. I need a focused kick sound.

4. I'm using the samson C02's as overheads but the ceiling is so low I can only get them 1 1/2 - 2 feet above the cymbals. even when I drop the stands really low. Whats are the consequences with this and how can I makew the best of a bad situation?

As always, many thanks,

Flashy

Hey flash, I had one of those, and used it on the kick for a bit. I put the b3 out front of the kit, about 1.5 ft away from the kick drum. A few inches off center, to the tom side.

I also used the -10 as it was pretty hot in front of the kick. It worked well, but you may want a smackier sound. When I used the mic this way, the whole kit came alive, particularily the kick drum.

Made the kick sound just delicious.

In addition to this, I had a mic on snare / hihat, 1 on toms, and two overheads. In my opinion, the LDC made the biggest improvement.

of course, ymmv

Hey there Pj,

What is that 10db pad for anyway? Does it protect the mic at source or just decrease the level it sends to the mixer?

I'm just worried about vibrations on the diaphragm but it's spec says it can take 139db of pressure or something so maybe that's okay.

Where can I listen to your drum recordings. I'd like to hear em.

ack, i don't have any of the drums. I had a house fire last year that took all my studio parts, PCs included.

I'm in process of rebuilding (waiting on a Mobo as we speak, and slowly building a studio in the basement) so hopefully it'll be soon.

Anywho, when I put the B3 in front of the kick, it was clipping my board terrible, so I dropped the gain, but didn't like the resulting feel / sound. So I switched on the -10db, and pushed the gain back up and viola! very good.

as far as the sound pressure, that's why I put the mic 1.5 ft out in front of the kick, so there wouldn't be any damaging sound waves, or air from the kick.

as for the -10db pad, I don't think it'll protect the mic, only cut back the outgoing signal. I suppose that's the same thing as dropping the gain, but it sounded better when the mic was doing it.

lol :) i should stick to more formal English greetings. I'm about as far from downtown L.A as I am from a major record contract.

I think the 10dB pad must protect the preamp stage of the microphone.

Correct me if I'm woring lol.

Look up the MAX SPL for the mic

Anything over 110 should be sweet me thinks

Other than that theres only one way too find out... : )

132/142dB SPL for 1% THD @1000Hz(0dB/-10dB pad, 0dB SPL=0.00002Pa).

Though 1% THD is quite a bit for a solid state mic....

And its rated at 1kHz, so I wonder how it will cope with lower frequencies.

But I say it should be sweet.... don't blame me if its not though lol.

Colonel!

Ha! Too late. I went to use it today (the B3), set it up, turned the gain up really high and it was making the same horrid wind rustling pop that my C02 did after I unplugged it with the power in.

The noise isn't as loud but I've buggered it none-the-less.

Two mics in two days!

What did you say your address was agin...? :)
