Windows XP has CD/DVD drives disappearing problem solved

I have seen this happen on my machines and others machines. I am unsure at this point what causes it, but I have never been able to solve it without a reinstall of Windows, which, needless to say, sucks.

Well, it just happened to my new office PC and I wasn't about to reinstall and didn't want to bring it to the store, so I did some Googling...unlike before, this time I foudn the answer.

In case this happens to anyone else, get the vbs script at www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs and run it...it will restore the drives to your Windows Explorer...

I wonder if MS has ever figured out why this even happens...

Anyway, thought I'd sahre in case others have the problem.

Have you gone thru your Windows log files, dB, and seen what they say, if anything? Does it look like everything loads correctly all the time? Do you have SATA?

no, it's all IDE, logs have given no clue, watson said nothing, it was a total mystery, and from reading the internet I was not alone in the problem, but hey, I have a fix for it now.

I've had the disappearing CD drive before. Luckily, mine always came back after a reboot.

I never had that happen with Windows... a similar thing happened with OSX 10.3 and external harddrives all the time with me though so I know the pain. It was a combination of "apparently OSX likes to corrupt external harddrives" and voltge problems over the firewire buss on the motherboard... which cooked itself one week before applecare ran out. :)

Looking at the script it just seems to delete mounting information... so I suppose it's like doing a umount and then corrupting the mount point. this appears to basically delete the mount point completely so windows can regenerate a working one. Not that I actually know anything about registry hacking...

yeah, thats all it is, removing limitfilters and mounts so Windows reinstalls them on the next boot...you can do the same thing by manually removing all those registry entries, but the automated script is kinda cool.

That explains what happened to the boyz box then. The drive was fine in my box but never came back in their box. Didnt matter in the end anyway as I replaced it with a DVD burner, but its good to know how to handle it now.

hell when mine disappeared I replaced drives, added an external drive and everything, nothing would work...if it was a CD or DVD drive it wasn't showing up...real pain in the ***.

Ya, that is what I went through with the boyz box. I didnt go as far as you did by trying an external but did try several other drives with nothing working. And now I just have extra CD ROM drives sitting about that may never get used. I think Tuna gave one to his buddy allready though.

Microsoft's Knowledge Base if most helpful - not. They suggest the "delete the controllers and re-boot", or, if you don't mind the strong possibilty of paying for the support call, they'll send you a "hot-fix"... "This is a known issue with the above-mentioned operating systems... blah blah blah"

heh I had a simialr statment regarding chaninging fuel injectors on an old Nissan Maxima "Due to the complex nature of this system it is recommended that it is serviced by a profesional" From the Chiltons manual no less...

My dad took one look at the engine, walked to his tool box, grabed a large crowbar, jammed it in between the fuel lines, and in 5 minutes we replaced all 6 injectors...

Your dad is a Hammer Mechanic I take it then? Most times it works out well that way.
