Recording drum mics on multiple tracks??...

Hi, Firstly hello I'm new here. I'm in a band called Kurfbound and we just finished recording our second e.p. Evermore in my bedroom. You can check out some tracks at www.myspace.com/kurfbound

Anyway, I used a Presonus 8 channel mic preamp with ADAT out to an EMU 1212M using Adobe Audition. The problem I had was recording the drum mics to separate tracks. No idea how to do this or if its even possible with this setup as the tracks all get mixed down in the EMU software. So any advice on what software or soundcard to use to achieve this would be much appreciated!

Also does anyone know of any devices available to convert an ADAT signal to a firewire or USB2 one?

Thanks

I believe the 1212m is a 2 input card, or maybe 4 with 2 analog, and 2 spdif, or maybe 6 if you switch the adat to spdif. You'd have to investigate the card to see what it's capable of.

Anyway, you'd need multiple input card, like the 1820m or a delta 1010. These can keep all the inputs separate, feeding them into separate tracks in your software.

The Presonus is a good front end, just need to pick up a 8 channel input card (or something similar).

You can also use a 4 input card, if you're just recording drums, like 1 kick, 1 snare, and 2 overheads.

Welcome to HRC.

Come to think about it, you should be able to ouput 2 analog signals from the presonus, and 2 spdif signals for 4 inputs in the 1212m. Keep them separate in your software, and you should be fine.

I haven't used audition, so I'm not sure of what it's capable of, but I'd think it can do this fine.

Thanks! Yeah I was just using 4 mics at the moment. I thought that with ADAT carrying 6 tracks it may have been possible to split these channels and record separately. Is this not possible or if so how??

Hi hilly & welcome to HRC. quickly looking at the card spec I am pretty sure that you ill be able as pjk says at leas have 4 inputs which you can then multitrack into Audition. For the audition side go through the options menu and select the device order etc and then go through o the multitrack screen and arm then away you go (simple - just like me - or i could be talking a load of *****)

but hey what do i know I'm only a drummer

ONLY A DRUMMER lol

I'm a drummer too! Drummers RULE!! Good ones anyway. Otherwise it can be quite annoying!

Thanks for your help guys

Still not quite sure about if its possible to separate the tracks transmitted via ADAT??

Cheers

It should damn well be possible to separate them on ADAT, as I understand it, thats the whole POINT of the channels...that said, I don't use any ADAT nuttin' so I can't tells ya how.

ya, me neither, I'm more likely to try to do 2 analog for kick and snare, then 2 spdif for 2 overheads.

I'd read up on the 1212m, there Hilly, and see if you can split the adat signal into separate channels. Otherwise, it'd be the same as running spdif (2 incoming channels, in digital format).

I'll have a read. Otherwise I think I'll give the 2 analogue and SPDIFs a try. cheers

what does ya mean dB are you insinuating we drummers are really that useless and make less mistakes if only two drums being played. (I might actually agree with you if i wasn't a drummer) LOL

Hilly - on the web site it says you can have up to 6 tracks on ADAT

I'm not too familiar with the emu software and how to record to different tracks. In fact I have tried and have no idea how. They way i've been doing it (rubbish way) is just mixing all the tracks down to one in the EMU patch DSP thingy and record the outputed mixed track in adobe audition. How do u select different input channels to record in Adobe Audition?

Not too sure as I only have two ins, But if in the multi track screen you will see all the tracks and try right click on the mouse which will bring up options for input device and order etc... click on the input device. Does this give you the option on selecting which inputs you can use upon recognising the emu card 'there is a selection of device type - rewire which may be of assistance but I have never used it so not too sure - just had a quick look at rewire in the help section this may be your bunny if the EMU card is rewire compatible

Funny how they say its ADAT, and it can only carry 6 channels. ADAT is made to carry 8 channels all at once via the light pipe. It shouldnt really be called an ADAT port if it is not capable of carrying the full 8 channels.

That said, yes the website said it will carry 6, so you should be able to (if Audition allows it) carry 6 channels into Audition and record them to 6 seperate tracks.

And hey, Welcome to HRC.
