Delta 1010 pre-amp needs

Hi, I'm seriously considering purchasing the Delta 1010 for multi-track home-recording. I do not understand the pre-amp requirements though. Do all signals need to be pre-amped? or is it only microphones? ie I intend to run a line-out from two separate guitar amps into the inputs, do these need to be pre-amped also?
These will be simultaneous with 1 or 2 vocal inputs, and at times a miked up drum-kit.
I'm guessing a mixing desk used to pre-amp up all the inputs will be the best option, but if we are only recording 2 vox and 2 guitars, do I need any pre-amping with the delta at all?

thanks for your help.

The Delta 1010 does not have any pre-amps. It will accept line ins at +4dB (professional) and -10 dB (consumer). Each input is selectable between these 2 choices. For microphones, U will need pre-amps or a mixer. The 1010 LT has 2 built in pre-amps on channel 1&2 with XLR connectors, but no phantom power. The remaining 6 analog inputs are RCA connectors. I think the LT inputs can be switched from +4 to -10 and vice versa with jumpers on the circuit board. The 1010 is the more professional grade because the AD/DA converters on in a rack mounteable box that is separated from the PCI card which reduces noise and interference from the computer.

Hey graull, welcome to HRC. Indeed you can get by with small mixer for doing what you need to do. The line outs can go direct into the 1010 as stated, making sure you do set the channel's you use for that to the +4 setting. And yes the pre amp's in a small mixer shoudl work fine for getting the mic's to the Delta as well, again the Delta channel's set to +4.

Thanks for that.

It is actually the Delta LT I'm looking at, hence I thought I could run the two mikes through the two pre-amped channels, and the the two guitars through two of the other inputs, and multi-track all four without needing a mixer or a pre-amp box.

Though I notice Soundmind says that the inputs apart from the pre-amped channels 1 & 2 are all RCA. Is this right? If so I'll have to get a small mixer anyway.

Yep, the other 6 are RCA. So it would either be adapter's to the RCA's or a small mixer and 1/4" to RCA cable's.

As an aside, I've pretty much reduced my choices down to between the Delta 44, and the Delta 1010LT, both readily available here in NZ.
I'm leaning towards the 1010 as it seems to get reviewed as the soundcard most suitable, but are there any crucial reasons that I should favour one over the other?

Not really. They both are good reliable card's. It really just depends on what your needs are. The driver's for both are dependable and fairly well maintained, literaly almost the same driver base. It is just a matter of the 1010 LT comes with a few more bell's and whistle's.

The 44 doesn't have spdif, nor midi, from what I saw, but the 1010lt has both. The 1010lt doesn't have balanced connections, if that's a concern, whereas the 44 does.

Course, there's that breakout box thing, having the converters in the box instead of on the card would help lower the noise floor.

Soundwise the converters should be the same, as well as the other internals.
