recording software

I recently bought an Alesis Multi-mix mixer / Firewire interface which comes with Cubase LE. The problem with Cubase LE is that it only lets you record 4 tracks simultaneously. Since I want to record at least 7 - 8 tracks simultaneously, I am going to have to get something else. I can upgrade to a higher-end Cubase product, but was wondering if anyone had other reccomendations.

Howdy, mapexvenus, and welcome to HRC.

There's a bunch here

www.homerecordingconnecti...st&cat_id=4

Some of them have reviews up here on HRC, notably tracktion, sonar, MTS, and some of the others.

I guess one of the key issues is cost, and if you're going to do midi. Sonar seems to be the bee's knees for all things audio and midi, but it's got a $$$ thing going for it.

dB reviewed tracktion and MTS for the under 200$ range, with good results. I'm partial to n-track, though I use FL studio for midi work, as n-track is a little weak. It's kickin for audio though.

Are you sure your Cubase LE is the limiting factor and not your interface? My Cubase LE is basically "limited" to 32 tracks. I can make all 18 of my 1820M inputs active... Go into the Cubase ASIO inputs panel and see if you don't have options for all your inputs. You may have to add ASIO sends into your mixer's software interface...

yes, this is a software limitation. I am talking about being able to record simulatenous inputs, not the number of tracks I can have. Cubase LE allows only 4 simultaneous inputs.

Thank you for your reply and the welcome :) I will not be needing midi at all.

Getting an upscale version of Cubase or any number of other apps would be your answer. Your situation is exactly why they bundle limited versions of apps with cards, to get your lips wet so you want to buy the full version.

That's what I said, and then purchased Guitar Tracks Pro 3 . Took me a while to outgrow it, and now I'm delving into Sonar 5-PE, and yes, I'm interested in all it's midi functions . My advise... whatever you get, make sure you can grow with it .

Good thing about the Cakewalk stuff, is that they allow you to 'up-grade' to other programs at a lower price if you're a registered user .

mapexvenus, are you sure? My Cubase LE does NOT have a limit on the amount of active inputs I can have. You may have to twiddle with the ASIO sends in your mixer's software in order to get them to show up in Cubase in order to activate them. Is there any documentation that tells you that your version only allows 4 inputs? Sonar LE limits me to 4 pair of ASIO inputs (for 8)... If you go out and buy new software, you'll of course get some nice plugins with the full version, but you might still only be able to use 4 inputs... Be sure.

Jmail, I am quite that I saw an message saying something to the effect that the version of Cubase that I had allowed only 4 inputs. I got this message when I tried to activite more inputs in the VST Inputs screen. I will try again tonight and let you know. Thanks for the feedback though. I will definitely not buy anyting new until I have ruled out everything else :)

That stinx. I don't get any "error" messages on mine. They must have done something "new". They probably figured out that most people who buy an interface will keep using the "Lite" version if it lets them... It'd definitely be tempting to go the Cakewalk route, like

Cubase SE allows 16 VST instrument inputs, I am thinking that this would be a good route to do with. As far as cakewalk goes, that sounds interesting too.

What a bumper, man
ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Download/Cubase_SX_3/Docs_English/All_Cubase_Feature_Comparison.pdf
(Oops, link doesn't work - must be the "ftp") Looks like they did change it... only 4 inputs. Why oh why?

I must have the earlier version 1.07 that allows 8 physical inputs (the 1820 uses stereo pairs). There apparently are quite a few peeved people on those forums for CubaseUsers who've bought audio gear recently with Cubase LE, believing they could record using all the inputs available on the device, only to find that Steinberg squashed that... Apparently, PreSonus is under the impression that their users can record using all the inputs... Sounds like there may be a battle brewing. One person called it "false advertising". I'm going back to my Cubase VST v5.1 and I'll quit worrying about dongles and piracy...

I like Cubase as well, it lets me incorporate Reason with the rewire function...

IS there anyway I can just buy and download the s/w instead of waiting for it to be shipped?

The bundled software may have differant limitations depending on the piece of hardware it is sold with.

As far as the downloading of Cubase SE, I would check the Stienberg website and see they have that available. I know Cakewalk has many of their program's available as downloadable software. I dont think they have it available for the bigger program's such as Sonar though. But I would definately check on it.
