what is the official reason

why my friend should not go and buy an expensive vocal mic and then run it into his computer through the 1/8 inch jack? i was telling him 'dont do that, i am pretty sure you are not supposed to' but wasnt sure what the real reason was.

One reason would be because it won't be a line level signal. He will need a pre-amp.

Another reason is you don't put hubcaps on a tractor...it's still just a tractor...

so the 1/8 inch jack is a tractor...

+ 48 V?

Mic inputs on budgo' sound cards would still be Lo Z right?

yeah...mic-in on PC just sucks...even worse if it's the onboard AC97 (the 97 means 1997 btw)

...it's like buying a nice mic and then recording onto something like a $5 cassette deck.

+ 48 V = phantom power, my bad.

I was just wondering if the mic in on budget sound cards is low impedance. I was thinking it might be high Z because I thought most computer mics are electret condensors and have their own pre amp etc.

If he had a cheap mixer to power the mic, there's no reason he couldn't run it into the line in on the computer. I used to do it all the time with an AT4050 into my mackie into the computer before I got a muli channel interface, and it sounded fine.

Of course you're not going to get the most out of your mic recording into the computer's mic in jack, but in the long run it's best to get a really nice mice and stair step your setup until you have a top of the line signal chain. Or you could get a $100 mic, a $100 preamp and a $100 dollar interface, and you will have wasted 300 bucks. So go ahead and get that nice mic and record it through whatever you've got. When you get more money get the preamps and interface. You'll be a lot happier down the road and won't have so much recording junk saved up. I started that way and ended up selling everything off and starting over the right way.

Petruso, that fact is you really cant record a standard type microphone with the mic in or line in of a PC sound card. If it is a condensor you will need the 48volt phantom power. If it is a dynamic, the input signal that will be generated by the PC sound card will barely be audible, as well as distorted if it is audible. That's why most of those little PC mic's are the electret type.

yeah but you can go to superpawn and get a "disposable" mixer for the price of a dinner at Denny's. The fact is, at least for me, that gear lust is a progressive disease. Stair stepping can get expensive. If I were to do it all over, every piece I bought would be exactly what I wanted, or it would be a used piece of crap. but that's just me. I've known people who got the low end gear and it satisfied the craving. But my gear demon needs to be fed a lot. You think you're an addict? Have you ever ?? for a preamp?

k, guys. my friend got a mixer and a shuer 57 for vocals and instrument recording. he'll be working on his laptop.

but now he tells me (i just wasnt thinking) that oh yeah, he still has that 1/8 audio in jack only, on his computer.

so like, can he just run his mixer outs through an RCA to 1/8 inch adapter into his computer or will that sound bad?

his soundcard must be factory. so im about to tell him to just pick up one of these 80 dollar external USB soundcards.

good idea? i know he wants to know if he HAS to go the external soundcard route or if he can just go straight in to the 1/8 as is without too much cruddiness.

whadoo i tellim

for the moment he can get an adapter but onboard audio is bad. It's like using onboard video in a PC for 3D gaming.
