i was thinking a dad might like to be able to stream his music collection from the main computer to the stereo, rather than messing around with hundreds of cds. dads should be introduced to the joy of creating playlists. so i was wondering if anyone has one of these units that let you stream from your computer to your home entertainment system. so far, i'm seeing talk (on amazon.com) that they might not work so well yet...at least the ones ive checked out so far.

anyone here have this, and is it stable?

forty, our production manager bought one a year or so ago. I believe it was these guys, www.kimawireless.com/ as I had them stored in my geek favorites list.

Anyway, he said he liked it and it seems to be working well for him.

hmm thats FM transmission, much like what ive fooled around with for past year, with very poor results. i have to watch out about getting swayed by these things, maybe. my griffin itrip doesnt even produce a usable signal in most cars. other products ive tried had the same problem. to use them ive got to basically lay my ipod right next to the radio theyre transmitting to. the only worthwhile FM transmitter ive seen was at a party. the guy had bought the thing on ebay--i forget the company. that transmitter worked through a wall and across the guy's sizable back yard with perfect quality. i looked at the specs and it seemed to violate FCC restrictions as far as signal strength, unless it's classified, possibly, as a non-consumer device.

anyway, thanks for the tip but im not sure what to make of this given my experiences. deep doubt is my first response. i was talking more about things that use 802.11g -- computer to receiver, receiver working on the wireless standard.

I seeee. I will ask him on Monday and see if he is having good luck with it and let ya know if I remember to ask. Ya, I know what ya mean though about the FM thing. I have had one that worked great, but that was years ago.

If I owned the place I would run inwall wiring... If I didn't own it I'd probably do it anyway... or run it through the heating vents...landlords never look for holes in heating ducts...

#1 Better audio quality
#2 It's a easy/challenging construction project ...easy if you have suspended ceiling...not so easy if you live in an old farm house...
#3 It'll probably be cheaper... I just bought 2,000ft of 22-2 mic cable for my church at $380....normal retail is $440...
#4 no fancy-smancy electronics to break/go bad/conflict with microwave.

However my only personal experience with wireless is with networking... which I absolutley hate.

i hate w3ireless networking too, but running wires is not an option. this house is florida style--the ceilings are very tall and the sections of the house are all screwy. i cant even envison a path to get the wires out to that room, and dad'd never consent to ripping anything up.

i do agree with ya though: my wireless link is extremely temperamental, and sometimes i dont have internet access on the remote computer for days at a time, for no known reason.

If wireless is the only option I would only get a system with the ability to use range extenders/repeaters As far as networking goes my best luck has been motorola routers with the D-Link DWL-G800A repeater. I'm not sure about audio though...

i was researching repeaters online, because the connectivity with the network here is so temperamental that something might need to be done. one of the things i saw about repeaters is that while they do strengthen the signal/pass it along, they cut into the speed of the connection. is this true?

depends... wireless is generally slower than a wired lan... but it depends on the router if the repeater will slow it. ie you gould have a 100MBps lan with a 40MBps wireless router and a 20MBps range extender with an 11MBps card. ...so even without the repeater the card can only handle 11MBps.
