hey man.

very nice production. I'm more of a folkster myself but I like a big night of breaks once in a while. Whats the context for this? I think it's important to get an idea of that before one passes judgement on anything.

I reckon its a 'got back from the club a couple of hours ago, just about ready to drift down slowly with a few good friends' kind of tune. That's just me though.

Clean but warm. also what's that sound in the bottom left of the mix near the back. it sounds like a huge herd of daddy long legs scratching their legs in unison. strangely theraputic.

take it easy.

Pixel, good to see ya again. Dont be a stranger dude, ya gotta pop in more often.

I love the rythm it doesnt get boring at all. Your choice of instruments was great. Lotsa hidden little bits in there. I had to listen several times to catch em all, and I'm sure I missed some. Love the string pad as well, and the part were her voice is drifting in the background of it all. Very smooth indeed, I could easily drift off to this one.

Some nice melody lines goin on in there, very easy to listen to. You are really gettin good with this stuff. And her voice, indeed if I need a female vocalist I will definately look you up to hook me up with her.

i know i do, i treat this place like a hotel ;)

context for this is that i'm getting close to finishing a nine track album, with a couple of vocal tracks, mainly on a jazzy laidback broken beat vibe, edging into liquid drum n bass with double bass etc etc...

this is the first track i did with tara (miss t) and after this i'm writing stuff for her to go ont he album as well.

thanks for the comments. its only the second time i wrote a non rock/folk/more traditional (?) track for vocals and i'm quite pleased!

and i promise, when i get more time i'll be around, but gigging at least once amonth, remixes coming out my ears and then me own stuff to do as well! (nto a complaint mind you!)

cheers for the comments..

Ya, I know how ya feel pixel. I was missing in action here for a few months as well because of to much work. Back in full swing again though and gettin my daily fix.

Listened to the mix again fairly loud, real nice. I might smack it to CD and take a listen in the car as well. Put a killer system in my Vibe so I do a lot of listening in there now.

That's pretty cool song. Nice and mellow. Cool mix and vox too.

I swear, I've heard this on NPR before ?... Liz' show ?... hmmm.

I listened to with headphones as well as cranked in the studio, about a dozen times... a beautiful mix as always, pixel . The vocal are particularly effective . I always learn something listening to your mixes... within the tiny details that you pay attention to . Little things that make sense in theory to someone not using them, that you incorporate... they inspire, and force me to take notes ! lol

Lessons for today were...
-(composition wise) Somewhere around 3:28 you start heading out of the main body of the song, continuing with some really nice touches along the way out to the end at 5:30 . This kind'a validates a few ideas I've had lately, that a relatively long extro can do alot to further define the songs message... kind'a drive it home . Worked nicely within this dark, plodding context .
-(effect usage) Ping-ponging the delay on an arpeggiated pad is really friggin' cool !... lol... the way you used it at the end was a nice touch .
-(Note to m'self : Take time to eq the verbs... refer to long grass .) I don't know how long you spent on the verb(s), and their place(s) throughout the song, but it seems as though they are a mix within themselves !... really adds flavor, throughout .

Hats off to tara as well, for the gorgeous vox tracks, and skills to catch em' .

Cool beans, and thanks for the suggestions . Can I ask how you dragged-out the 'knew it all along...' part that echoes past that 3:28 mark ?... Was this something that got it's own wave/track ?

its put together in ableton. i know theres heaps better ways but i'm a bit of a luddite.

all fx on vocals are in ableton.

at the end of each third line theres a ghost track, only singing the last few lines.

on that is a delay, set to 16, feedback 99% and completely wet.

this means you dont hear any of the original and only hear the delay signal.

it also means its fades away etc. theres a bit of digital distortion (redux plug in) that winds up during the repaeted delays, twanging it and changing it slightly, progressively more the quiter it gets.

all the line end delays on the track are done this way. but with the delay automated for different puases between lines (ie middle of verse is set to 4 and 25%feedback, end of verse 8 and 50% etc)

theres three vocal tracks on top of that.
1) melody with no harmony, panned slightly left and bit of verb n delay to give it abit of body
2) melody with harmony at the ends of each third line, panned slightly to left and with slight granular distortion and very mild delay. this makes it sound just a little different, enough to not clash and phase and merge.
3) one heavily fx'd track in the middle, at a low volume, basically to multitrack it but also give it a little bit of dort to fit the arrangement.

i really do make it up as i go along, its proabably a really bad way of doing it, except so far it osunds right to my ears, so i'm gonna do it like that again! lol
