Multitracking Mixer to a Mac question

Hey everybody,
i run my home set up off of my powerbook g4 which is the best one avaliable so it does quite well. I've slowly been moving up the bar recording wise and now i am to the point where i would like to start recording more than one track at a time. I know i would need a mixer with at least 4 tracks (i'm aiming for a 6 or 8 track) and that i need the software (which i already have, i continued to be amazed at how proffessional garage band can be for being free with my computer). I know how i can direct each track into seperate tracks in garageband as well. What im just curious about is how i'm supposed to get everything into my mixer and then get it into my computer via one cord. Is it possible to plug the mixer into the line in and still route each track on the mixer to seperate tracks? or would i need a mixer that plugs into the usb or firewire ports. Or even are there other ways of recording numerous tracks at once for my situation. PLEASE HELP! Thank You!

give me your opinion on my sound quality if youd like to as well, id appreciate it :

Congratulations, you are about to dive head first into the wonderful world of sound cards.

Oh, and please don't double post!

You can only record !one! audio file at once with your mac's onboard soundcard, no matter how many mixers or how many cords your running into it. This is because.... it only has one input. If you plug everything into your mixer, and take the line out from your mixer to your sound card, you're recording many signals onto one track. And no, you can't seperate them.

Take a look at:

Also take a look at these:

Most of these are 'multi track' soundcards. You will notice that they have more than one input. Therefore you can record more than one track simultaneously.

Hope this helped!

could you possibly explain what id have to do in a little more depth please? I have a powerbook as well so a sound card isnt a possibility seeing as i have no pci ports because its a laptop. I understand what the function of the soundcard would be but what kind of product would act like one for a laptop? I really appreciate it though because i know what general direction to go in now at least a bit more.

If you take a look at the link that I posted at the bottom of my last post, you will see a variety of PCI, USB, and firewire soundcards.
