my cat lost a fight with our garage door...

I'm pretty sad right now as my cat is, though still alive, badly injured from being crushed by our garage door this morning.

Apparently she was stuck under it for an hour and a half. We're pretty certain there's intestinal bleeding due to some blood at the scene. She was shaking from hypothermia and shock... now she has really bad Hip Dysplasia... can bairly walk and cant climb/jump... though she did manage to make it down a flight of stairs.

We arn't taking her to the vet because she's 18yo and has already used up a number of trips...especially with a poisioning incident a few years ago. She can go to sleep and wake up and is fairly alert... she just looks more pissed off than normal...

But we're going to have to wait and see if the internal damage is too much.

:(

Really sorry to hear that. You should really take the cat to the vet and have the injuries diagnosed.

Bummer Zek . I don't like cats a bit, but it is still a pet . If it's bleeding internally and 18 yrs. old, I hate to say it, but you might consider helping it pass comfortably at that point . I'm afraid it's one more trip to the vet to find out what's best . Just lettin it bleed-out internally to see if it's hurt-enough to justify the $$$ is not cool .
I had a dog that tried to eat a porcupine once... even after hours of pulling quills from an animal that is biting at you insane with pain, it was still worth showing that dumb animal the respect for life that the 'human animal' is sometimes capeable of . Even though it's a cat, it was a 'friend' for 18 years, right ?

Sorry man, I hope everything works out for ya's .

Hi zekthedeadcow,

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you are like our family, our pets are part of the family and we feel devestated when something like this happens.

Unfortunately I live on a farm pretty close to a gravel road on which people like to go 50+ mph. Dogs and cats come and get ran over on a yearly basis. Still sucks to lose them though. Last time I went home our cat got ran over, then the next day our German Shepherd got ran over and we had to shoot it. That was rough.

Hey man, sorry to hear it. Hope it all works out. I don't know what I'd do if I lost my dog or my cat, they're such a great part of my family.

Wow.. that's pretty sad and she's 18? Most any vet would say to just put her down.
Hope all turns out well. We've two cats here 17 & 15 that are very much part of our family. So I know how it feels.

Well, she seems to be improving. She is able to go up and down stairs (usually) mainly due to her normal stubborness. She also went outside today for a little bit. I "think" she went to the bathroom which is our main concern. She does spend more time sleeping so we piled blankets around the house for her to crash on. She waddles less but limps.

The "good" news is that it appears that what we thought was rectal bleeding was apparently blood from a rear claw she tore off while struggling. blood from the mouth we still think is from biting her gums or tounge.

Shes a persistantly stubborn urbanized farm cat so we've decided that if she's going to die it's going be on her own terms... as long as it isn't someplace in the house where we can't find her :)

Update - It looks like she's going to make a mostly full recovery. She's about as active as she was before, though she jumps down steps differently. She's also obviously terrified of the garage door and hides under the biggest vehicle in the driveway when it operates.

Though it does seem like hiding under a vehicle while the garage door is operating could also be somewhat dangerous.......hmm?

Just a thought....
