Sonar 5... the 'real' requirements ?

H'okay, I've been looking at the new Sonar5(Amazing!), and wondering if there are any major compy-upgrades that I'll need to do to be able to run this puppy without issues .

Current set-up is...
AMD 2400+ MSIK6(FSB=266) w/512MB DDR2700RAM
120GH Seagate HD, M-Audio 24/96
128MB Radeon 9600

I'm not concerned with running it in 64-bit mode, but I would like to get up to 20-24 tracks with bells and whistles out of it in 32-bit mode .

I figure another 512MB of ram, and perhaps even upgrading the RAM to 3200 speed, but there may be something I'm missing...

Upgrades soon to follow(Dec-Jan) are quiter fans, an SATA HD config, HarBal, and if I'm a good boy maybe one of these :
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

heh I've been puting this off for so long, and with the last year of BS, well... let's just say I'm more motivated than ever before .

I run Sonar 5 on essentially the same computer you have, it's a little bit beefier, but not much, you should get the 512 more RAM, other than that, you should be OK.

Sawheeeeet ! I'd like to be somewhat familiar with it by the time the other upgrades are in place . That's one bad mo-mo of a program !

What's your favorite 'area' of it ? er... capability .

The templates are a nice touch .

? the capability of the whole...

that said, track folders is nice...

I guess 'features' was the word I was looking for .

Yeah, organizing tracks has always been an issue for me, so that's good to know .

Thanks Deebs !

Hue, if your motherboard is limited to a 266 fsb, you will not get any improvement in buying the PC3200 memory (400mhz memory) as your motherboard will be the limiting factor and will merely declock it to the 266.

(e.g. I have an amd 3000+ with a 333fsb, and a abit kd7-raid motherboard, thus me buying pc3200 ram would be a waste of money since it'll only declock the 3200 to 2700)

check your motherboard (need exact model number) on www.crucial.com where they have a memory matching utility and it'll tell you what your motherboard can use.

Tru-dat Ken, I can't change the fsb without upping the processor to 3200, but it would help up-to that point . I'm going to stick with the DDR2700, and see where that takes me . The 3200 processors are getting hard to find, and they're not cheap either so... I'm at that point where the next step would be out of this box and into a 64-bit system... a whole 'nother build .

Maybe I should be thinking in that direction now, but I just got everything sorted on this one, and it's so solid ! lol I'm hoping I'll be good as long as I'm not recording a crap-load of tracks all at once . Thanks, though .

well, 3200 won't hurt anything, plus it's faster if you do eventually upgrade your CPU you'll have that much ready...

tru dat as well. The 64 bit processors use the 400mhz memory, so you wouldn't have to throw it away when you upgrade.

Yup . The 3200CPU upgrades were around 180$ when you could find 'em, I can't see going there without considering stepping into a 64-bit system . The upgrades I have planned will transfer to that nicely, with the RAM being the only issue, were I to do it .

I'm told that the fsb on the 64-bit systems gets up to 2000mhz !

Uhm, wow .

I think I'm wrong on that, though .

no, you're right, i just saw a 64 bit with a 1600mhz fsb, however, you can't compare apples to oranges. Fsb isn't an indicator of memory speed or anything. If you look at the 64 bit AMD motherboard specs (you have to match your memory to your motherboard, not just your cpu), most will only accept pc2700 (333mhz) or pc3200 (400mhz) memory.

I imagine AMD's next step will be to create processors that will take advantage of faster memory, since that's where intel is beating them at this point.

Hey Hue, glad your stepping into Sonar. You wont regret it at all.

I guess my favorite feature would be the synth rack. Especially now that it will actually allow patche changing and such now. I do like the layer and track folder feature as well though.

OMG ! It is soooo nice ! And yeah, there is quite a bit of synth-works in it... actually got me thinking of getting the keys out, and having a go at it . Deffinately a huge resorce, which I've let go untapped . I'm kind'a glad I didn't just dive into this one right off the bat though, as I feel somewhat overwhelmed by how vast this program truly is... ye 'ol learning-curve . Inspiring and intuitive, but quite deep . Beautiful pluggins, I might add .

Another midi-newb with questions is on the way . lol
