I was *this* close to buying this interface today, but I refrained. I can get it for $420, and have sound forge 8, and sibelius 4. I'll primarily be doing composing (MIDI) with limited vocals (just to get something with words in the mix).
Anybody used the 18/14? Good bad ugly? The closest thing I can find to meeting my needs would be the yamaha i88x, or Presonus firepod, but I don't want to fork out the shells for the firepid, and the i88x doesn't have separate headphone/monitor level controls, which i'd have to work around. Comments appreciated.
Many thanks.

Oct 13, 2005 04:37 pm If you're just looking do to vox and MIDI, you might use what I had before acquiring my MOTU.
I had a USB midi cable (just to connect my admittedly aged and limited Yamaha synth) and the M-Audio Firewire 410, which comes with some ok software on its own.
I can't pretend to speak authoritatively (there are better folks on board to do that), but that might well cover what you need. Just keep in mind that the M-Audio (as with other interfaces of the kind) doesn't do MIDI playback like a soundblaster or what have you.
Oct 13, 2005 05:39 pm It won't play back Midi because it doesnt have a hardware Midi synth, right? ok, I think the puzzle pieces are falling into place. That'd be why I'd need a software synth if I'm not mistaken?
