Hello,

I know I have posted a previous cover of this but I think I just completed the version that will make it onto my first EP release. This is all me with original piano and vocals (produced, mixed, engineered by me, as well). Please give me any comments, suggestions, tips, etc. as I can still make changes before I call it complete.

Thanks for your time!

I loved the old version, I think i like it better than the new one. It seems like you're trying really hard to keep your voice in key. Otherwise it's very good, I just liked it with more feeling.

I think I want to beef up the 2nd last verse with some more emotion, definitely, because this song needs to climax or it gets kind of boring.

This was the song that really turned me on to Grace. By the end of the first listen, I knew I was on to something special.

You've got a good start here. The piano is a bit dry, I dont think that a subtle touch of reverb would hurt it at all. Nice job covering Buckley's cover of Cohen without ending up sounding like Cohen or Buckley. I won't argue with you about adding some more dynamics to the piece, since the ebb and flow of the vocals and piano (well, guitar) are what really drive Buckley's version.

I think that I made this comment on another of your songs, but I think the autotune is doing more harm than good. It just sounds unnatural to me for some reason. You don't have a bad voice at all, just keep practicing and you'll end up with the confidence to nail the notes on your own!

Okay, I hate to keep pestering you guys to give my mixes a listen but I have uploaded a new version of the song with the following:

- no more Auto-Tune
- resang some verses
- resang the chorus a couple times
- lower-octave backing vocals
- new breathy backing vocals
- reverb/delay on piano
- more distortion/tube effects

Please download from the link at the top of the thread and let me know what you think :) Thanks for all of your help, you guys. This song means a lot to me and I really want to get it right.

brockferguson. I just listened to it on my crappy computer speakers. It might be them, but the piano sounds a bit hard compared to the vocals. Did anyone else get this impression?

There are still a few spots where the vocals are a bit off, but I certainly couldn't have done better myself. I think that you have a good voice, and I'm glad to hear you get rid of the autotune. Maybe even try to experiment with a bit of vibrato when you have to sustain a note, just to take some of the stress out of hitting the exact right note. But you don't want to end up sounding just like Jeff tho. I mean that wouldn't suck, but Jeff already did that, you know? ;)

I agree with Kenny that the vocals sound a bit buried. I tend to mix my vocals too low in the mix as well. Maybe try to scoop just a few dB out of the vocal frequency range of the piano if you haven't already. Not sure where it is for you, but between 1KHz-4KHz usually does it for me.
