"Just Say It: You're Scared" - 67.15.182.24/~vibeserv/justsayit.mp3

Hello,

Here's another track from the home studio written, composed, engineered, produced, mixed, and mastered by yours truly :)

What do you think?

Do the distorted vocals take away from the sound? How is the vocal level?

I am going to redo the vocals (I don't like how they sit on that first chorus very well) and they seem kind of noisy (too heavy compression on the verses, I believe).

Any thoughts? Opinions? Tips? before I head back in to the studio with this one?

YEp, the verse vox seem to jump way to far out front. I would try to find a way to blend them and sit them back a bit in the mix.

A very gentle pinch of reverb will help, and maybe take a little brightness out of them as well. Putting a little bottom end EQ on them as well might help ese them back as well. Carefull to not use to much though as it could become muddy sounding.

Hello,

I redid the verses in a low, close-miced tone. How do you feel about them now? I am much happier with them, myself.

Are there any vocal spots that could use re-doing? Thanks for all your help.

(I re-uploaded the file so you can re-download above).

Sounds pretty good brock, chorus sounds excellent, I would work on the verses a bit more vocally, they just seem off a bit. Interesting song, good strong hook with chorus, mix is pretty nice. :)

Another version has been posted with tweaked vocals, better mastering (cleaned up w/ the Spectrum Analyzer) and the removal of the last line of the song.

Please let me know what you think :)

Just listened to it again now. The vox are sitting better in the mix now. I like the way the feel oc the tune changes as it moves back and forth between verse and chorus.

As OD stated though, maybe work on the vox a bit as far as drifting out of key here and there. Are you doing the vocal takes with headphones on? If so you might try keeping the vocal parts up loud in the headphones, I know this might help from drifting out of key as you are singing.

Do you feel I am out of key during the choruses or verses? Or both? I have Auto-Tune as an insert in there (just lightly) as an effect. Maybe that's what you're hearing?

It varies. You start out great on the first verse, then upon entering the chorus it strays a bit. The it varies as the song progresses.

I will try and give a listen again tommorrow and maybe pinpoint some of the areas it really stands out.

I can hear the bad vocals over the first chorus but I think that the first verse and last 2 choruses are both locked. The second verse is questionable (the AutoTune makes it sound worse instead of enhancing it) and the bridge has a bad last note that's also hurt by AutoTune.

Do you agree with that?

It sounds like autotune keeps making you sharp. Hell, I'd rather hear it without autotune, I think that you could keep it in tune better without it. Just keep rehearsing, recording, and carefully listening. You'll have it nailed in no time.

Great arrangement, mix sounds squeaky clean and well done. Vocals could use some high-frequency definition. I like the midrangy and slightly warm quality to them, and I like the style of the phrasing of the lyrics. Too many people write in couplets and iambic pentameter any more...its refreshing to hear a freer style of lyrical phrasing.

All in all, good job. This is a little more synth-driven than my usual tastes, but you pull it off.
