Hey everyone, I have a hardcore/metal band in the studio that wants to do something called a bass dropout at a breakdown. A bass drop out is basically when the bass is boosted up extrmely so that everything sort of clips for a second and sounds like an explosion. Does anyone have any idea how to make this happen? Should I record an extrmely loud bass note? Should I use a bass note from Reason or another program?

Sep 23, 2005 03:33 pm Use a limiter or compressor, send the signal into it as hot as you can, and hard clip it to get that blasted, distorted sound. Then send it into the mix and adjust levels so it doesn't blast out your overall mix.

Sep 24, 2005 08:54 am I'd record the note by itself on another track, then volume automate it to full, and maybe EQ automate it as well to keep it sounding somewhat decent. Although, the digital clipping may sound pretty harsh.
You could also record an overly loud bass note like you mentioned, into something that will clip easier than a mic, like a pocket recorder, or mini-disc mic. I've recorded onto minidisc that clipped in the analog fashion, not the digitial fashion. Can't say how it sounded as we weren't looking for that at the time, so discarded it.
