Recording onto multiple tracks at once?

Hey, what do I need to buy to be able to record from multiple sources, and each individual source records on its own track?

Say that I have a guitarist, a bassist, and a singer. And that we all want to play at the same time and record. What do I need to do in order for each intrument/voice to record onto its own track? That way I can individually mess with compression and other things for each person.

I currently have a 4 channel mixer, and a M-Audio 2496 soundcard. Besides mics and cables for 3 people, what do I need? Thanks.

Well, for starters you would need a new sound card...you can only record as many tracks as your sound card has inputs, so, with the 2496 you can only record two mono tracks at any one time (analog, anyway).

You are also limited by your mixer...you would need a mixer with direct outputs on at least three channels, or a mixer with at least three subgroup outputs (these generally come in groups of four tho:-).

I would suggest a bigger mixer and a card like the Delta 44 or something along those lines.

I see, so could I record two mono tracks at once with what I have now? I could pan the first mixer channel all the way right, and the second mixer channel all the way left. If so, how would I get them to record onto seperate tracks?
