Hey, and welcome to HRC!

The only thing you're absolutely going to need is some sort of preamp to go between your microphones and your sound card. That will give you the most basic of set-ups. I use a two channel USB external "sound card" which has preamps built in. A lot of people run their microphones into a mixing board (with preamps) and then into their sound card. Some people use a dedicated mic preamp.

There's other stuff like compressors and such that are nice, but not essential for just laying down some basic tracks.

Hope this helps...

thanx jim
i was just thinking about that issue since my sound card it does'nt look""strong enough""ya know i mean but let me go a little deeper in this question i play trumpet bass and guitar( guitar was to use my mine instrument since i change for bass long long time ago and i play trumpet in a meddium level) so i can do a half band of myself (ja)my problem start with drums you know that every one of us like to hear a lot of music and probably you found a 5 seconds of just pure drums with no any other instrument on
so you say hey that it's the groove that i like for my song how can you extract those five seconds of mighty drums and put it to work in your tracks there's any software that do that ""part""

Your 0404 is a good start, especially for the price... like guitar_jim says, you'll need a pre-amp for mic recording. Do you have mics yet? If not, for a start, consider the Shure SM-58 to start with. At approx $100 (US) a pop, they're a well-rounded, versatile deal.

A pre-amp can be anything from a tape deck with mic inputs, to a mixer, to a dedicated mic pre-amp, anything from say $50 to $500. Since you've got a 2-input card, I'd start with a 2 channel solution. If you're low on funds, some of the small Behringer UB mixers, or a small Yamaha might be the best bang-for-the-buck.

As for the drums, did you get the newer package with your 0404? I'd say "probably not", since you've got Cubase VST 4... Check out (if you haven't already):
www.emu.com/promo/software/productiontools.asp
for the new package that at $20 for the 0404 kit, is a fantastic deal. You get to try out several recording programs, upgrade some to full versions, and it comes with Proteus X LE, an EMU sound module. And there's Ableton Live Lite in the package, also. What you're alluding to in your 2nd post is called "sampling", and is very do-able with several programs. Someone else can direct you better there than I can. If you're not interested or don't have the funds, check around in some of the software you have now, that came with the 0404, and see if there isn't a little software drum "machine" of some sort.
