Is it legit to use a comp/limiter as your mic pre's for hard disk recording

Right now i'm contemplating purchasing a M-audio octane 8 or Presonus LT to act as my mic pre's for recording. But the price is a little bit high on those and out of my budget at the moment.

I'm using a behringer multicom MDX4400 compress/limiter 4 channel to serve as my Mic PRE right now and it's been ok, I cant really tell what would be the difference from a normal mic pre.

Is this a legit way to record? or will mic-pre's be needed, my mics dont use phantom power at the moment. and I adjust gain through the software mixer of my soundcard.

is there anything I should be looking out for as far as the XLR inputs?

If you get decent sound, and your not wrecking anything, I dunno as though anybody could call it illegit...

Indeed, only you know what you're happy with. The way it's tended to go for me is that i trot along happily with what i have for a while and then i'll notice what i need to get next and i get that, trot along for a bit.. and so on.

There's no legit or illegit way to record as such, it's just about getting what you or the client wants essentially.

If the Presonus LT is the Digimax LT it has pretty good preamps, but you will need an ADAT compatible sound card with optical converters to get the best use. Steinberg sells the VSL2020 that can do this and also has 2 analog inputs and SPDF. Retail is USD $399, but I have seen them for $199. I think the Digimax LT sells for about $599. You get 8 channels which is good. IMO

yah, ive been using the moto 2408 mkII for ages, I believe that has ADAT Lightpipe which the Digimax LT supports.

Just that times are tough financially, I had to sell most of my gear at one point. which included my old mixin board.
