i recently purchased a M Audio firewire solo. When i record in sonar, i can not pan the file. It only playsback in mono. How do I get the audio to be able to pan to the left or right. If its not possible with the fiw-solo, then i will need to return it.

Sounds like it is an issue with Sonar, not the firewire card. I'm assuming panning would be pretty easy to do in Sonar. Maybe I'm missing something???

What version of Sonar do you have? Do you have the latest maintenence releases for that version? Latest drivers for the firewire device?

Are you sure it's recording a mono track and not stereo with dual mono tracks? Dual mono's that apps see as a "stereo" track can be weird when it comes to panning...

Dunno if that made sense or not...but I know what I am trying to say...

You should be able to pan anything. That is irrelevant to what sound card you are using. Check your program settings, and make sure you're in the right setting.

ok, this unit only records in either left or right channel. so if one wants to pan, need to select record in appropiate left or right channel, not in stereo. if in stereo, then i have to select mono to be able to pan.

Yeah, so you record in mono. Then you can pan left or right in the stereo mix. Did you get it all figured out, or are you still having trouble here?

I think you are confusing your channel inputs w/ your ability to pan.

recording in LEFT and RIGHT from the sound card is just how the card assigns its ins.

for example, my sound card motu 2408 has 8 channels of analogue in. so it appears as a set of 4:

Device 1: 1/2 Left/Right
Device 2: 3/4 Left/Right
Device 3: 5/6 Left/Right

etc.. etc..

So if I want to select for it to only record one channel, then i select the input for it to only record the LEFT SIDE, of device 1.

then once that track is recorded (in mono). I use the multitrack editor to pan it.

ok, so if say i want to record with my two channels, device 1/2,..... i set for stereo? and this is recorded into 1 track?

I have one mic input, and one line instrument input.
If I want to record mic into track 1, and guitar into track 2, then i select> track 1 mono left, and track 2 mono right.
thanks for all of the help.
