Recording!! Vegas 6.0 vs. Acid 4.0

lastnight i downloaded the demo of Vegas 6.0 from sony's site. thought i'd give it a test run. now so far i've been very pleased with the products from sony, Acid 4.0 and Sound Forge 7.0. i am progressing to the point of where i want to do multi track recording, which Vegas is very capable of doing.

just to give you a heads up on my method of recording. in Acid i like to create a region and set it to loop while i record. that way i can do a number of takes of the same musical piece over and over again. then take that recording into Sound Forge, crop out the take i like best, loop it in acid if need be, and presto a beautiful recording.

so i read the Vegas manual to learn how to record and it seemed simple enough. it was pretty much the same as Acid except for a few differences here and there. the one difference that really bugged me was when i created my region and set it to loop while recording. it looped, yes, but it also looped my recording. so each time it looped, it was like the recording was "starting over" with a new take. i hope you understand what i'm getting at. this is pretty much my only gripe about vegas. is there a setting to correct this issue or is it already set in stone that way.

so knowing my issue, do the majority of multi-track recording programs record in the same manor as Vegas. tonight i'm going to test out the demo of some Steinberg software.

p.s. one more gripe, in vegas the project tempo is only visable if you open up the project properties window. is there any way to make it visible like it is in Acid???

I have not used Vegas since like v3 or so, and yes, the properties dialog was the only place I could get at some things that other apps had readily available. Perhaps you can add toolbars via the "view" option in the menu bar, I am not sure.

Looping is pretty standard across apps, if you loop a project, it will loop everything. I know SOnar has "groove clips" which are like Acid Loops, where you can drag in one single-measure loop and just drag it to be as long as your want and it'll keep looping and looping, I would assume Vegas supports Acid loops close to the same way...

how can i better explain what was happening...

ok.. for example in Acid 4.0, i can select a region of 4 measures and have it be looped. while recording the looped region will play while i record. i can record as long as my PC will let me. so even though i have a 4 measure loop playing while i record, i can have a 5 minute recording come from that.

in vegas if i attempted the same thing. a 4 measure loop playing while i record. my recorded product will only be 4 measures long. each time the loop starts over (while recording) it erases what was previously recording during that session....

hope that better explains it

I'm not familiar with Vegas, but if I'm understanding what you mean you need hunt for the option to Allow Multiple takes, that's the way it works in the program I use.

...and olddog (Dan) which program do you use? you see right now i record 1 track at a time. with Acid i'm limited to one track at a time. i really like the products that sony puts out, keep in mind i have yet to demo anything else. well, i really want to get serious about the home studio and i'd like to find a program that will allow me to multi-track recording.

my dream would be to find a decent school in my state, Maine, to take course on being a studio engineer. do some work in a "real" studio to learn. hell i'd work for free. then at some point get the nerve enough to open my own studio.

so what i'm doing now is some research on multi-track recording, software & hardware. now right now i'm not exactly at the point of opening a "real" studio. so i don't need the highest end equip, like pro tools, not needed. but i'd like to be able to record, mix and put on a cd and have ppl say, "wow, that's damn good. you did that at your house???"

I use Adobe Audition 1.5, the only real draw back it has is it doesn't support midi other than to play a midi file.
