What do you read?

OK, US folks, what's your favorite magazine to read to keep up with today's modern recording technology? I can't seem to find anything that satisfies... I've not subscribed to anything (not even PC Magazine) for a couple of years, and I'm still having withdrawal symptoms. I want my hands on printed paper for some reason... It seems that most everything folks put out in print these days is more of the same-ole same-ole, almost an advertisement for product, not a real magazine. Is SOS or Mix about it? Opinions? Thanks.

One nice thing for me, living in the US, is I can get most magz out there... but are they worth it? Since dB does Music Tech, I'm inclined toward it. I can get a US sub to SOS, which I might do, but, colonel, which is your fav, the one you don't want to do without? My current "budget" allows ONE choice (yes dear...)(she is sweet, tho, like, le-grrrowrr).

Music Tech Mag is from the UK, US subscriptions cost a bit, each issue comes with a CD packed full of demo or special-edition full software, samples and all sorts of stuff, many of which I use often. The mag covers a lot of stuff for home studio peeps, tutorials, reviews and good info.

I love the mag. www.musictechmag.co.uk

i read both SOS and music tech for a while - eventually i could only afford to regularly buy one and i chose SOS - i felt music tech magazine always leant towards computer and sample based music too much. maybe it's changed now though, it's been a while since i read it.

but yeah, SOS is like my bible :)

Thanks guys, maybe I'll do the boutique bookstore 'cross town for a few months and buy them both off the shelf and see which I prefer. I don't want to ignore the sample-based stuff, but I did grow up in a *real* garage band, 2 guits, bass & drums. No sampling there, just us. We later added a B3 and were in keyboard heaven. Then the mini-moog came along, and it ain't been the same since...

Ahh, but wyd, you have the "luxury" of working in a music store, don't you? Which do you like the most of EQ, Mix or Recording?

I confess to not read any of the above but I do like the Beano!! hehehe...

Err, a wee joke - I read Computer Music (UK publication I think) - not bad, cover discs are usually full of demos only which is OK but a tad restrictive.

Aye - you guys seem to have better mags over there.

Cheers

Coco.

Music Tech, Computer Music, Electronic Musician and Recording magazine. As well as the occasional copy of Keyboard and Mix.

No idea if you've already made your decision, but I find that Electronic Musician really covers enough stuff that you're not just going to be sitting around twiddling your thumbs if you're looking to do a more "natural" approach to music. For instance, I recall one issue where the article was all about getting mic cabinets to suit varying budget levels.

Probably the best investment I've ever made. (Two year subscription, baby!) =)

I still get Tape-Op Minkus. It did get kinda lame for a bit there though, so I didnt read it much. Its now getting a bit more up to date, but I think Larry has run outa new ideas to keep it all analog so he's letting the digital stuff come in and amake a bigger presance.

I'm gettin most of my info from wed sites like this one. Magazines are supported by advertising, and this suggests some bias in many of their articles. A necessary evil, I suppose. BTW, Db, does Blackbelt help more with mic placement, or dealing with untalented musicians? lol
