Jul 28, 2005 07:05 pm I got the SX 5-string J-bass knockoff. It really is a good budget bass. The only things I don't like about it are the tuners. They're not very accurate and they don't hold tune like they could. And the low B string on it is a little floppy.
But it has great pickups for a cheapie bass. It's a little more of a midrange sound. A little more rock and roll.
The deep sound that you're after might be had with a good compressor. Actually, I record it direct thru a tube preamp and compress the crap outta it with software, and it sounds pretty good. Never played it thru an amp, but I can't imagine it having a much different character.
Maybe factor some new pickups into your budget if you want a cheap bass to have deep lows.
But overall, I think its a great buy for the price. It's certainly not a piece of crap, which is about all that you could find elsewhere for $100.
Jul 28, 2005 11:32 pm can't i just eq out some of the mids and thing? and boost the lows?....what kinda sound will u get from it if u do tha?..(and i am using my fingers for it not a pick)...(im looking at the 4 string jazz bass version but i guess it will share alot of the same with the 5 string)
Jul 29, 2005 04:55 pm i'd go with a P-Bass style, with the tone knob rolled all the way down, and use a neck pickup...also flatwound strings produce less overtones. and leave the same set of strings on for a few years.
Jul 30, 2005 01:20 am yea man i realize like when my strings get real worn out on my classical acoustic especially the 3 low strings the tone be lower and round.....i wonder if they got worn out bass strings on ebay LOL......
Jul 30, 2005 11:19 pm Reggae music is my speciality. Go with a P-Bass style bass for sure. Of course, a Fender P-bass (vintage is best) is perfect. Musicman Stingray basses are hot. Modulus basses are amazing too.
Since you are looking for something cheap, a P-bass style will do. Turn down the treble and up the bass. Playing with flatwound strings will give it a really nice tone as well. My bass player almost exclusivly plays with flatwounds on his vintage p-bass. Sounds amazing (Eden Amp and Head). Check out some old Dub or Reggae tunes. Most of those recordings were P-basses. mmm... nothing like good bass playing in reggae music!
