HDD for better recording

Hi...
I have a pc with 2 SATA ports and 2 IDE...
I have a raid 0(strip) between 2 80GB sata disks.
I'm about to format this pc and the question is:

Would it be better if
1)I "brake" the raid between the disks and have
One Sata for recording
One Sata for the samples
2)Add an IDE disk and install windows there

I need your advice before i do anything wrong...
thanks

Well, I won't say anything I mention is "right" or "wrong", just what I would do...

Given your situation, I really don't see any benefit in a raid set up. What you are proposing is a legitimate solution, however, let me ask, how much space do you need for samples and recording files?

I would check and see if perhaps you can get by, at least for now, by buying nothing new. Have one SATA drive your system drive (and perhaps samples) and use the second SATA drive as your recording drive (and perhaps samples) just kind of fitting the samples on whichever drive is handy. If you have hard-copies of your samples, such as on CD, removable drives or whatever, you don't have to worry about formatting your system drive, as you could just recopy them to their original location.

I have IDE drives from my other PCs and thats why i wonder if it would be better for me to place one to this pc so i have two sata just for
recording,playback and samples...
NO windows on them...
Would raid be good in that case.....

Like I said, I wouldn't worry about raid myself...

Would it be faster if i place windows in one sata, have the second sata for Rec and add a master IDE for samples...
I'm so confused.
The issue is that now with just one raid do all the staff (OS,Rec,Play,Samples)i believe that i don't get much of what my pc can do...
What do you think...
Thanks

With a raid you loose the benefit of having your audio on two seperate drives...how much space does your collection of samples use?

The reason I ask is just wondering if your samples need to have their own drive. I typically keep my samples on the same drive I record onto...then all audio is being accessed from the same drive...but then, I know people that have gigs and gigs of samples so it's not possible...

Just trying to figure out where you fall in that category.

It's multiple drives that the operating system sees as a single drive. So "d:" drive could actually be 2, 3 or more physical drives.

Not necessarily, it's really a wash. It's not good, bad or otherwise. But considering he is (was) using that raid as a single drive for Windows, apps, audio and sample, yeah, that a bad idea.

I never raid myself, it can have it's place, but not in this situation...in my opinion anyway...
